Santorini is one of those islands that people flock to each year. Not only is it a popular cruise port, but large numbers of people flock to the island for extended vacations. They arrive looking to capture some of the magic they suspect is here on the island. This includes the unique landscape, delicious cuisine, historical sites, sunsets, and the fabulous beaches. One of these beaches people should consider spending some time at is Monolithos Beach, which boasts a unique, black-colored sand. Here’s more information about this beach:

Getting to Monolithos Beach

Monolithos Beach is about 8 kilometers (about 5 miles) from the Kamari airport, 1o kilometers (about  from the port in Athinios, and 8 kilometers (about 5 miles) from Fira, the island’s capital. There is a decent public transportation system on the island and you can easily take a bus to the beach. It is also possible to take a taxi if they are available (there are a limited amount of taxi drivers on the island) or your rental car if you have one.

Interesting Features of Monolothis Beach

One thing that makes the island of Santorini so unique is its volcanic activity. The entire center of the island has sunk to the bottom of the sea due to a cataclysmic volcanic eruption that occurred in ancient times. Many believe that this event was the origin of the myth concerning “Atlantis”.

Myths aside, the volcanic activity on the island has impacted other features of the island’s landscape. The beaches are no exception. The black “sand” on the beach is actually a remnant of an ancient volcanic eruption. It is soft and fine and feels good on the feet. The only problem is that on hot days the sand gets really hot, so you’ll need to wear shoes.

Spending the Day at Monolithos Beach

Monolithos beach is one of the most enchanting beaches on the island, partly because of its evidence of Santorini’s volcanic activity. There are also some unique rock formations here that are interested. The beach features a long stretch of sand so there is plenty of room for everyone. It is also off the beaten track, which means that it doesn’t see a high amount of tourist traffic.

It is also a historic beach because it is the site of the island’s first tomato canning factory. Santorini is also known for its deliciously sweet and unique tomatoes. This is also a beach that is popular for families because the water is fairly shallow. This means that parents can let their children enter the water without worrying about them.

There are also some activities to do here, such as a basketball court and volleyball nets installed on the beach. You can easily spend the day here enjoying all that the beach has to offer! For those looking to spend the full day here, there are some nearby cafes and restaurants, so you don’t need to feel as if you need to pack a lot of food.

Monolithos Beach is absolutely worth visiting while on the island of Santorini!
