Vikos Gorge is a gorge in the Pindos Mountains. The gorge is found along the southern slopes of Mount Tymfi. Vikos Gorge is about 20 km long and ranges from 120 – 490 meters in depth. The width of the gorge spans from just a few meters at the narrowest point to 400 meters at the widest.
Vikos Gorge collects water from small rivers that run into the Voidomatis River, forming the gorge.

Vikos Gorge is home to a number of herbs that are collected and used by local healers to make various recipes. Some of these herbs include: spearmint, gas-plant, lemon balm, absinth, and St. John’s Wort. At the local natural history museum, there is an impressive collection of 2,500 dried species of local herbs and plants. Vikos Gorge is also home to Northern Pindos National Park. This is the largest National Park of the mainland of Greece.

At Vikos Gorge, you can explore the area by river rafting or via a kayaking tour. If you prefer staying on dry land, you can mountain bike, climb, or hike. Every mode of exploration will thrill you and give you a unique view of the area.

If you are an avid hiker, the Vikos Gorge Trail that runs north to south is an 11.4 km point-to-point trail. This is a hike that is more suitable to experienced hikers who enjoy a more difficult hike. Wildlife can be seen on this trail. Camping is an option if you take this trail. Vikos Gorge provides a number of lookout points that will allow you to experience the full beauty of the area.

How to Get to Vikos Gorge in Epirus

Traveling to Epirus, Greece can be done by plane, ferry, and bus. There are two airports in Epirus. The airport of Ioannina accepts only domestic flights while the airport of Aktion/Preveza receives flights from abroad, but is only active during the summer months. If you are coming to Epirus from Italy, Paxi, or Corfu, your best option is to take a ferry.

Once in Epirus, the most convenient way to get to Vikos Gorge is by rented car. While there is bus service, they do not run daily, which may be inconvenient to your plans. If you prefer not to rent a car, you can hire a taxi to take you to Vikos Gorge.
