Written by in , Comments Off on Recipe for Greek Style Octopus Braised in Wine

Variations of this dish are present throughout Greece. The wine that is used depends on the region but the dish seems to taste best when using a combination of sweet and dry wine.

Greek Style Octopus Braised in Wine (Oktapodi Krasato) Recipe Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Greek extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 medium onions, chopped fine
  • 3 garlic cloves, chopped fine
  • 1 large octopus, about 4 pounds (cleaned and kept whole)
  • 3/4 cup dry red wine
  • 1/2 cup sweet white wine
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 5 allspice berries
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Directions on How to Make Braised Octopus in Wine:

Pour the olive oil into a large pot and set the heat to medium. Add the onions and sautee until they soften, about 8-10 minutes. Add the garlic and saute for another minute.

Reduce the heat to medium-low and add the octopus, wine, bay leaves, thyme, and allspice. Cover and let the mixture heat for 10 minutes. Set the heat to low and simmer for 40 minutes. The octopus needs to become tender but not fully cooked. At this stage, stir in the tomato paste and simmer for another 30 minutes.

When done cooking, remove the bay leaves and allspice berries. Cut the octopus into smaller pieces and place in a serving dish. Pour the leftover liquid over the octopus.
