Written by in , , Comments Off on Recipe for Greek Style Tahini Cake

This simple cake is made with tahini, a ground sesame paste with the consistency of peanut butter. It can be served all year long but is especially popular during Holy Lent since tahini is an acceptable food for fasting.

Greek Style Tahini Cake (Tahinopita) Recipe Ingredients:

  • 1 cup tahini
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon brandy
  • 2/3 cup orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground anise seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom seeds
  • 2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting

Directions on How to Bake Style Tahini Cake (Tahinopita):

Preheat the oven to 350 Degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a 9-inch round cake pan with nonstick cooking spray. Set the pan aside.

Add the tahini and sugar to a large bowl and beat on medium speed with an electric mixer until it forms a paste and is well combined. This should take about five or ten minutes. Add the olive oil and beat until the ingredients are mixed well. Add the brandy, orange juice, allspice, anise, and cardamom and continue to beat until smooth.

Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients slowly while beating it on low speed with the electric mixer. Pour the batter into the cake pan and pace in the center of the oven. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. This should take around 40 minutes but check the cake with the toothpick at the 35 minute point just in case.

Remove from the oven and let the cake cool in the pan or on a cooling rack. Dust the cake with confectioners’ sugar just before serving (after it cools).
