Santorini is one of those beautiful Greek islands that you can certainly get lost in. It’s so easy to spend an extended amount of time here never run out of things to do. However, what if you only have one day? Fira is a popular port for cruises. Whether you only have a day in Fira because of a cruise or you’re staying in a different spot in the island, it can feel as if one day isn’t enough. However, it’s plenty of time to at least get an overview.

Here’s a look at what you should do if you only have one day in Fira, Santorini:

Explore the Main Town

Fira is the main town in Santorini and when you first arrive here, you should take some time to walk the main streets and get an overview. Browse through some of the shops, take a look at the view, and in general soak it all up. You might even want to stop for something to eat or drink in one of the cafes, tavernas, or restaurants.

Visit the Archaeological Museum

Even if you aren’t a history buff, you will still enjoy the Archaeological Museum of Fira. It will only take an hour or two to see everything in this small museum, which means that it is a nice place to visit so that you can get an overview of the early history of the island. It houses artifacts from many of the dig sites on the island and also will give some information about the history and culture of the early people of the island and the rest of the Cyclades.

Soak Up the Sun on the Red Beach

Although not right in Fira, the Red Beach is pretty close. Take a taxi or public transportation to this beach and spend some time here. It should only take you about twenty minutes to get here by car, and the trip is well worth the effort. The sand here is red and the strip of beach is narrow and nestled against tall, red-colored cliffs. This whole area shows evidence of the volcanic history of the island.

Watch the Sunset in Oia

If you have more than a few hours on the island and in Fira, you will want to take the extra time to head to Oia in time for sunset. It is well understood that Oia not only has the best sunset view on the whole island, but in all of Greece. The sunset near Fira is pretty good, but it is so spectacular on Oia it is worth the trip. It takes about 25 minutes by car to get to Oia from Fira. If you have even more time to spare, consider doing the coastal hike from Fira to Oia. You can arrive in Oia in time for sunset and then take a taxi back to Fira.

It may not seem like one day is enough to spend on Santorini. However, it does give you plenty of time to get an overview.
