Ermou Street is the main shopping street in Athens, Greece. For those who love shopping, Ermou Street is like heaven. The street is one and a half kilometers long. A good place to start when at Ermou Street is at the top of Syntagma Square. Syntagma Square is the central square in Athens. The square is located in front of the 19th century Old Royal Palace and close to many attractions including the Arch of Hadrian, the Acropolis, the National Garden, and Plaka. From the top of Syntagma Square you will walk down the steps past a lovely fountain.

Ermou Street is a commercial street that has become a pedestrian only street. This allows for leisurely browsing in a safe environment. Occasionally there will be a motorcycle or taxi that goes along Ermou Street from the hotels. Ermou Street is the main clothing shopping street in Athens.

Go Shopping on Ermou Street

Ermou Street is home to many shops, especially clothing shops. If you enjoy shopping and getting deals on items you would normally buy, this is where you will want to visit. You can easily spend hours browsing the stores along Ermou Street. There are internationally stores as well as Greek stores. Near the top of Ermou Street is a Greek department store called Fokas, which is wonderful to explore. Stores are both large and small and owned by small business owners as well are larger corporations. People who work in the shops speak in English as well as Greek so you won’t have to worry about a language barrier. For anyone with a passion for cosmetics, there is a large cosmetics store along Ermou Street that is like its own department store with its very own café.

Other Activities to Enjoy on Ermou Street

Ermou Street is more than just shopping though. As you stroll along the street, you will see mimes, clowns, other street performers, and street merchants. There are also coffee shops and fast food places along Ermou Street when you need a refreshment and to rest your feet.

As you walk along Ermou Street, you will come to a small church called Kapnikarea. This is one of the oldest churches in Athens and an important Byzantine monument. It is thought to have been built during the early 11th century. There often people sitting around this little church taking a break from the hustle and bustle of shopping.

Getting to Ermou Street is easy if you’re in Athens thanks to the many choices of transportation. You can take the metro, the bus, or even walk. If you take a taxi, your driver will know exactly where to take you. If you want to start your journey at Syntagma Square, just let them know.
