Athens, Greece - August 16, 2015: Two tourists look at panorama of Athens and Licabetus hill fro walls of Acropolis. When visiting Athens, it’s obvious that there are two sides to the city. Sure, it is an old city that has been around since ancient times, but it is also a modern one. What happens once you’re finished seeing all the typical, ancient sites, such as the Acropolis and the Parthenon? Well, there’s still a lot left to see! Here are some of the more “modern” things you can do while visiting the city.

Shop for Souvenirs

It’s okay to act like a tourist while visiting Athens! If you need some souvenirs to bring home, check out the area near the Plaka. Sure, this is a very old section of the city, but the shops have modern wares. For an authentic Greek experience, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit the Monastiraki market elsewhere in the city. There is a high variety of shops here and you’re sure to find what you need. You can even negotiate for the best prices, just like the native Greeks do!

Consider a Culinary Experience

Enjoying delicious Greek food is definitely part of the modern experience of Athens! Several restaurants and taverns offer unique experiences for groups. You can actually book a cooking class and eat the fruits of your labor. Be prepared for the experience to last anywhere from three to five hours, depending on where you go. Most of the restaurants that offer this experience also require reservations far in advance, but you’ll keep the skills you learned when you go home. The city also has some culinary tours. Just ask at your hotel for more information as to the best experience.

See a Movie Outdoors

Are you looking for a unique experience? Consider watching a movie outdoors! Cine Paris offers movies projected on a screen in the midst of a rooftop garden. Cine Flisvos offers an outdoor screen (and a larger seating area) by the sea. In the middle of the Athens “green space” is Cine Aigli, so you can enjoy a film surrounded by greenery. Boboniera is one of the oldest open air theaters if you want to watch a movie in an area that’s been operational since 1920! All of the different outdoor theaters offer traditional movie theater fare like popcorn and nachos, but most will also offer Greek-specific meals, if you decide to take in refreshment at the theater rather than at a restaurant.

Visit an Escape Room

Escape rooms are a huge trend in Greece right now, so you might want to experience at least one while on your trip! It’s an easy way to add adventure without going far past the city. ome of the most popular include Lockhill in Karaiskaki Square, The Great Escape (which offers several different themed options) in Psirri, and even a true crime scene themed room in Agia Paraskevi. A group is locked in a themed room and must use their wits to solve the riddles to make their escape. It’s a unique activity to fill your schedule, and with so many to choose from, you could escape from tons of different places during your stay.

Once you’re done visiting the ancient historical sites of Athens, consider trying one of these more modern pursuits!
