The island of Astypalaia is a hidden gem in the Aegean Sea, often overlooked by tourists. However, if you’re looking for a beach experience that is off the beaten path and will offer you some tranquility from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, then Kaminakia Beach should be your next stop! This article outlines 11 reasons to visit this beautiful spot on Greece’s western coast.

About Kaminakia Beach

Kaminakia Beach is located in the north of Astypalea island, very close to Aperathos, Greece. The beach lies between Kastro and Aperathos, and it is a pebble-sandy beach. It has crystal clear waters, and it offers ideal conditions for scuba diving. Several fish species are living around the area, which makes this place attractive for divers and snorkelers. This beach also attracts those visitors who love long walks as there are numerous small coves along its way to enjoy your walk without having anyone disturbing you by any noise or music.

What to Do in Kaminakia Beach

There is no shortage of things to do at this beach. The beach is a gorgeous one, and it is popular destination for tourists who want to stay active.  Not only that, but there is a lot to do in the area as a whole. Here are some of your options:

Snorkeling

It is the exercise of swimming on or through the water while equipped with a diving mask, a shaped breathing tube (snorkel), and usually swimfins. It may be done to observe underwater attractions for pleasure, sport, exercise, or work (referred to as “aquatic safety”). Snorkeling is a common recreational activity on the Kaminakia beach.

Scuba Diving

This is a method of underwater diving that relies on self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba), which allows divers to swim beneath the surface of the Kaminakia beach water with more flexibility than snorkellers who remain at the surface. It also provides the diver with the chance to view underwater attractions for extended periods and in greater comfort than is possible when freediving.

Swimming

If it is your first time swimming here, be aware that the waves might get quite strong and huge at certain times of the day and can easily throw you off, so always take care when going for a swim! You should pay attention while swimming in Kaminakia as there are no lifeguards nearby, and it can be quite dangerous when big waves come crashing down!

Fishing

It is ideal for fishing people to fish for small, medium, or big game fish. There are many local fishermen here who rent their equipment to people who would like to go fishing.
Sailing around Kaminakia Beach

If you love the peacefulness of the sea, then sailing might be your activity of choice. You can either rent a boat or ask one of the locals where to go if you are interested in sailing around Kaminakia.

Dining

You might need refreshing after all these activities, so it would be wise that you visit one of the seaside bars and taverns nearby during the evening hours for dinner and drinks. Also, there are several restaurants along the coastline where you can taste delicious fresh fish.

How to get to Kaminakia Beach

The best way to reach Kaminakia is to rent a car or moto, either you bring it with you from the island of Rhodes or plan this holiday trip later on. There is no public transport which reaches Kaminakia, so your only chance is to use the local taxis outside Aperathos port. It would be better though to have your transportation as then you can reach all those small coves.

The beach gets full of visitors during the weekend, especially on hot days, so if you get there early in the morning, you might be lucky enough to claim one or two secluded areas for your own!
