After all, the Ancient Acropolis and the Parthenon are some of the most recognizable places to visit in all of Greece! However, there is so much more to the city that that. It’s also a modern, bustling metropolis with a vibrant culture that visitors and locals alike enjoy. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in the city’s eating establishment. Here’s a list of some of the best restaurants to visit while in Athens, Greece:

Cafe Avissinia

Featuring home-cooked classics and an impressive menu of mezedakia, Cafe Avissinia should top your list of restaurants to eat at during your stay in Athens. It’s a bit tucked away, as well, but the food is so good that it always seems to have a healthy crowd. This is an ideal spot to find refreshment if you’re visiting the Monastiraki flea market since it is close by. The official address is Kynetou 7 in Monastiraki. Try to plan your visit so that you eat here when there’s live music!

If you want to visit a traditional Greek taverna, Kanella is the place to be! However, despite the fact that it is a traditional taverna in spirit, the decor and even some of the items on the menu have a modern flair. Be sure to try one of the fresh salads and lamb dishes during your visit – these are some of the dishes that the restaurant is most known for. It’s located at Leoforos Konstantinoupoleos 70 in the Gazi area of Athens.

Funky Gourmet

Are you looking for a place to eat that features “new” cuisine that is a little more spontaneous? Funky Gourmet located at Paramithias 3  Salaminas in Keramikos is one of those places where you’ll be able to experience some new twists on traditional Greek foods. The chef at this restaurant also has two Michelin stars, so the cuisine does appeal to an international audience.

Spondi is another restaurant that has two Michelin stars, but the cuisine tends to be a little bit more traditional. Continually voted as one of Athens’ best restaurants by locals and tourists alike, Spondi appeals to a wide audience. Although the dishes are traditionally Mediterranean, it takes these classic home favorites and gives them an elegant twist by adding French haute cuisine elements. It is located at Pyrronos 5 in the Pangrati section of Athens.

If you’re looking for a traditional taverna that is easily accessed from many of Athens’ main tourist sites, Paradosiako is your ideal spot! Located right in the Plaka, this restaurant features delicious, traditional cuisine in an easy and relaxed setting. If possible, try to eat outside to view some of the best slice-of-life moments that Greece has to offer! It is located at Voulis 44a in the Plaka.

Mavro Provato is one of the best restaurants in Athens when hankering after mezadakia, which means that you may want to make a reservation ahead of time. Be sure to drink your traditional small plate dishes with Cretan raki or traditional Greek ouzo!
