Where Can I Take the Best Sunset Photos in Santorini?

Written by in , , Comments Off on Where Can I Take the Best Sunset Photos in Santorini?

Santorini is not only only the most visited island in Greece, but is one of the top destinations in the entire world. Millions of visitors flock to this island every year to catch a glimpse of the famous white buildings and blue domes overlooking the Aegean Sea. While the entire island is a photographer’s dream, here are the top five photography locations you can’t miss.

Catch the Sunset Over Oia

When you think of Santorini, whitewashed buildings and windmills are most likely the first things that come to mind. Oia is the second largest village on the island and is, without a doubt, the most iconic. You could spend all day here wandering the narrow streets and photographing the breathtaking architecture, but be sure to stay for sunset. There is a reason this is mentioned on pretty much every travel guide. Crowds begin to gather early so be sure to secure a good spot at least one hour before sunset.

Hike the Fira Trail

This trail between Fira and Oia has some of the best views on the entire island. At a leisurely pace, this hike takes about three hours. The views from this trail are beautiful any time of day, but around sunset, the colors of the sky are spectacular and the weather is cooler and the trails are less crowded. While in Fira, be sure to photograph the island’s volcano.

Visit Imerovigli Village

The name Imerovigli actually means “view spot” in Greek, and it is not hard to see why! There are so many viewpoints here it can be hard to settle on just one. This village is a blue dome paradise and offers a stunning view of the Caldera. The jewel of this village is the picturesque Imerovigli Anasasi Church which is the perfect place to capture those famous blue domes. Located only 2km from Fira, this village is easy to get to and is less crowded than Oia and Fira.

Lounge at Akrotiri Beach

Santorini actually has many different colored beaches which is part of what makes this island so unique. Akrotiri is the red sand beach and is arguably the most beautiful. The bright turquoise water against the red sand and cliffs is a stunning contrast and makes for unique beach photos. Other unique beaches include the black sand at Kamari and Perissa.

Visit Amoudi Bay

While the hike down to Amoudi Bay from Oia is worth it just for the views of the island, the main reason to visit is for the cliff jumping. If you have a waterproof camera, be sure to bring it along. The crystal clear mediterranean water makes for stunning photos and cliff jumping is an unforgettable must-do experience in Santorini.

These five locations should be at the top of your list on your trip to Santorini, but don’t forget to explore on your own as well. This island is full of hidden gems tucked away behind the tourist- filled spots in the guidebooks. Santorini is a photography paradise and will leave you dreaming of the magical sunsets and stunning architecture for years to come.
