Things To Do When Visiting The Greek Island Skyros

Written by in , Comments Off on Things To Do When Visiting The Greek Island Skyros

Skyros is one of those islands that has an almost mythical quality. It’s the largest of the Sporades island group, but that still doesn’t mean that it’s as large as some of the other, more common tourist havens. This is the type of island that people flock to when they are looking for a true, isolated Greek island escape. However, isolated and quiet doesn’t mean the same thing as boring! There are plenty of things to do here. It’s just that life moves at a much different pace. Here’s a list of some of the most common things to do while on the island:

Molos Beach

Considered one of the best beaches on the island, Molos Beach is a true gem. Unlike some of the other beaches you may encounter while in Greece, the beach isn’t made of smooth pebbles – it’s got plenty of sand to make any die-hard beach goer happy. Spend some time lounging on the sand on your towel or beach mat, or rent a bed so that you can soak up the sun sand free. There’s also more to do here than just sunbathe. You can also explore the caves, go snorkeling, and bathe in the warm seawater.

Manos Faltaits Historical and Folklore Museum

Are you looking for a place to learn all about the culture on the island of Skyros? Sure, you can certainly experience it when you venture out of your hotel. However, for a comprehensive look at what the culture is all about, you really must visit the Manos Faltaits Historical and Folklore Museum. Each floor has a different theme that celebrates the culture, and there is even a Greek theater that you can view by request.

Archaeological Museum of Skyros

Like much of Greece, there are remnants of its rich, ancient past exist wherever you turn. The Archaeological Museum of Skyros houses a large number of local artifacts and can give you a great overview of the ancient history of the island. Although the museum is fairly small (it has only two rooms), the collection is still impressive. This museum is definitely worth a visit.

Mouries Farm

Agriculture is something that has shaped the island of Skyros for centuries. In order to get an overview of this, Mouries Farm is a great place to be! Here, you can learn all about Greek farming, see some of the famous Skyros ponies, and even dine at the onsite restaurant. The farm is made up of volunteers who are more than eager to show you the ropes during your stay. In fact, many users report that the property is so much more than just a restaurant, it is a fun educational experience.

Agias Fokas Beach

If you’re looking for a secluded, unspoiled beach to spend some time, you should definitely head to Agias Fokas Beach. The scenery at this beach is amongst the best on the island. Spend some time bathing in the water and soaking up the sun, and then head for the onsite restaurant for a delicious meal.

As you can see, Skyros is one of those Greek islands where you can relax, soak up the sun, and learn something in the process.
