Recipe for Greek Style Sugar Syrup

Written by in , Comments Off on Recipe for Greek Style Sugar Syrup

Many Greek desserts are finished off with a sweet syrup such as this. The syrups in many recipes call for honey, but what if you don’t want to use honey or you don’t have any on hand? This simple syrup recipe can be used instead of the honey based syrups in most recipes.

Greek Sugar Syrup Recipe Ingredients:

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 1/2 cups water
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Juice of 1 orange
  • Juice of 1 lemon

How to Make Greek Style Sugar Syrup:

Add the sugar and water together into a large saucepan. Set the heat to medium and stir until the sugar begins to dissolve. Add the cinnamon sticks.

Continue to heat the syrup through until it starts to bubble, stirring occasionally. Leave the pan uncovered. Continue heating it until the mixture comes to a boil.

Lower the heat and reduce to low so it could simmer. Stir the syrup periodically. Let the syrup simmer until it begins to thicken. This should take about twenty minutes.

Add the vanilla extract, orange juice, and lemon juice and let the mixture simmer for another 5 minutes. You can either use it right away or transfer it to an airtight container to store in the refrigerator. You can store this syrup in the refrigerator for about a week.
