About the Open Air Cinema

Cine THISIO is an open air cinema in Athens, Greece just below the site of the Acropolis. The Open Air Cinema typically opens during April and is closed at the end of October for the winter months. Opened in 1935, the Open Air Cinema is the oldest summer cinema in Athens. In 1980, the Open Air Cinema was passed to the Maniaki family who take care of it and have turned it into a popular spot for people to watch movies outdoors. The Maniaki family is devoted to respecting the history and tradition of the Open Air Cinema. They pour their love and attention into keeping it at its best.

The family takes equal care and attention to choosing the movies they will show at the Open Air Cinema. During the winter months, they watch movies and decide what will be shown during the coming months. Many films shown are classics that are loved year after year. Newer movies are also shown at the Open Air Cinema.

The Open Air Cinema in Athens does not take reservations. They remain traditional and there is enough seating, all of which is good for viewing the film, that reservations are not needed. You can only buy tickets once you arrive at the Open Air Cinema. Films to be shown at the cinema are posted at least 10 days in advance, so you can plan your trip to the cinema according to what you want to see.

The Open Air Cinema adds to the feeling of summer with handmade sour liqueur and frozen homemade sour cherry made with black sugar. If you don’t have a sweet tooth, you can enjoy delicious hot dogs with tsipouro, an un-aged brandy. The cafeteria at the cinema offers a variety of food and drink to enjoy while you watch the movie. For your comfort, there are tables as well as chairs provided while you watch. It is also accessible to people with disabilities. Wheelchairs are more than welcome and they will be shown to spots where they can view the film with no obstructions.

The most convenient way to get to the Open Air Cinema is by the Metro. From the Thissio station to the cinema is just a 10 minute walk. From the Akropolis station it is a 10 minute walk to the Open Air Cinema. You can also bike to the cinema if you wish. The staff will show you where you can put your bike while you watch the movie.
