Lipsi is a small, almost forgotten Greek island that is near the Greek islands of Samos and Leros. Because it is a bit off he beaten track, the people who do make their way here are in for a real treat. The island is stunningly beautiful, and despite the fact that it isn’t as popular as some other places in Greece, the island still manages to attract a fairly healthy tourist crowd. Here, visitors will find a beautiful, rugged landscape as well as stunningly blue waters. Lipsi also has a rich history and was even mentioned by Homer in the Odyssey. This is the island where the nymph, Calypso, entranced Odysseus, which made it difficult for him to leave. Here’s a look at what to do while visiting Lipsi:

Lounge at the Beaches

Lipsi is known for its gorgeous scenery, which means that visitors and locals alike flock to its beaches during the warmer months of the year. Although the crowds that do come here aren’t as big as what other places in Greece experience, the beaches here are usually pretty active. In fact, beaches like Kambos are worth coming to the island for since it is considered one of the prettiest beaches in the Dodecanese islands as well as in the rest of Greece. Other beaches to visit include Platis Gialos Beach, Katsadia Beach, Tourkomnima Beach and Hohlakoura Beach.

Visit Panagia tou Harou

This is a church that should top your list as places you must see while on Lipsi. This is an historical church and people flock to Lipsi just for the chance to catch a glimpse of it. The church dates to around the 7th Century A.D. and is a great example of the type of construction that was popular back then. However, there aren’t a lot of examples left in Greece that are still standing, which makes this church worth visiting. Be sure to gaze at the Holy Icon of the Virgin Mary while here. It is one of the church’s most popular features.

Shop at Psaremata

If you’re looking for a great pace to explore while on Lipsi, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit Psarmata. This is a great place to browse and do some shopping while you’re exploring the rest of the area. You can also rent boats and fishing equipment here if you want to do something a little different during your time on the island. You can also buy some souvenirs here and browse the offerings.

Go to the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian

One of the things that people enjoy doing while on Lipsi is visiting the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian. This monastery has a beautiful Greek Orthodox Church located here, and visitors also report that it is a great place to experience the traditional art and culture of the island. There are some great views located here, as well, and also a hotel and some shops that are nearby. Visitors have said that it can be fun to rent a car and explore the island, including this monastery. You’ll want to make sure that you dress respectfully and also pay attention to the hours that the monastery is open to the public.
