Thasos, Greece is a beautiful island located in the north Aegean Sea. The island possesses emerald waters, mountainous villages with character, and green forests. Thasos looks like a giant rock that springs out of the Aegean.
The island is home to archaeological sites, churches, special monuments, beaches, museums, and so much more. When visiting the island of Thasos, you’ll find no shortage of things to do, which makes it a great destination.

Visit the Seaside Village of Limenaria

On the island of Thasos, you will find the charming seaside village of Limenaria. The village is located on the southwest side of the island and boasts a lovely harbor as well as amazing views of the Aegean Sea and Mount Athos. When spending time in Limenaria, you can relax at one of the many taverns located by the sea. An important monument in the village is the building of Palataki, which served as the headquarters of the German Company that exploited the quarries of the island of Thasos. If you want to relax, the beaches of Tripiti and Pefkari are worth a visit.

Try Local Specialties

The island of Thasos is home to some delicious products. Wine, virgin olive oil, and honey are some of th locally made products you might want to take home with you. When dining, you won’t want to pass on the local specialties. Peppered cabbage is a winter dish that consists of local pickled cabbage, white beans, and peppery spices. This dish is mainly served in the mountainous villages and goes well with local red wines. Bouyourdi is a dish that features feta cheese that is placed in a clay pot with other soft cheeses, tomatoes, peppers, olive oil, and pepper. Bouyourdi is a delicious appetizer. There is no shortage of local dishes on the island of Thasos, so don’t be afraid to try something new.

Spend Time Outdoors

The island of Thasos has many opportunities for you to spend time outdoors. You can relax on one of the amazing beaches, which include, but aren’t limited to: Giola, Chrissi Ammos, Livadi, Koinyra, and Paradise. For those who love to be active there is no shortage of outdoor sports to participate in. Take your pick or try them all! Go horseback riding, diving, hiking, mountain biking, windsurfing, and even off-roading.

Visit the Acropolis of Thasos

The acropolis is on a hill of Limenas. The first inhabitants of Thasos Island constructed the wall of the acropolis to use as a treasury safe. The acropolis itself was a defense of the ancient town. Over the years, the acropolis has been reconstructed many times. In one area, you can see the remnants of the Ancient Temple of Athena. At the highest point of the acropolis, you will see relics of the Sanctuary of Pan. In addition to the breathtaking history you’ll experience visiting the acropolis, you will admire the view just as much. Wander the various hills and take in the view from different heights and angles.
