Marathon, Greece is well-known for the Battle of Marathon, but if you’re planning to visit the area, know that there is a lot to explore. There are attractions, important historic sites, and much more to offer that you won’t want to miss. Here’s what you can do while visiting Marathon.

Visit Lake Marathon

Constructed in 1931, Lake Marathon is water supply reservoir. It is an artificial lake, but the landscape surrounding it adds to the beauty and creates a lovely lake-like experience. It’s the perfect place to go when you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Athens and relax for a bit. The lake is just 1 hour from Athens by car. Just a 10 minute drive from the Marathon Dam you will come to location of the Marathon Battle.

The Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC and would be won by the Athenians, showing Greeks that the Persians could be beaten. If you visit Lake Marathon, you’ll want to stop and see this important site as well. If you enjoy hiking, there is a trail that goes through the Oinoi Gorge to the Marathon Dam. This trail is 8 km and clearly marked. There are also other trails in the area for you to choose from.

Visit a Museum

Marathon is home to a few museums. Marathon is where the marathon race was born, so if you’re going to visit just one museum, The Marathon Run Museum is the perfect choice. The museum showcases more than 3,100 exhibits that take you through the history of the marathon race from 1896 until today. There are medals, Olympic posters, personal items of athletes, and so much more.

One important collection is the personal items of the first Olympic Marathon Race winner named Spyros Louis. The Archaeological Museum of Marathon consists of five different halls. Collections include pottery from the Neolithic Period from the Cave of Pan; grave reliefs, statues, and boundary stones from around the Marathon area; and statues. Another museum you might be interested in is the Marathon Battlefield and Museum.

Take a Tour

A tour can be a wonderful to see Marathon, Greece. It will allow you to see the most important sites in an organized and timely manner. One tour you can choose is an eight-hour tour of Athens and Marathon that will take you to the Acropolis of Athens and the archaeological site of Marathon as well as the site of the Battle of Marathon.

You can choose from private tours and group tours. Highlights of tours can include: the Marathon Tomb, the Marathon Museum, Marathon Beach, the Temple of Nemesis, and the Temple of Themis.
