Written by in , Comments Off on What to Do in Kassiopi on the Island of Corfu

Corfu is one of the first islands in Greece that was open to tourism. However, it was in the map long before that and was known for its beauty. In the Odyssey, this is the island where Odysseus was shipwrecked. Nowadays, Corfu is a place that attracts people from all over the world, and places like Kassiopi are among those destinations on the island that people want to visit.

Kassiopi is a pristine village almost 40 kilometers from the main town o the island. It’s a fairly busy town and there will be plenty of things for you to do here.

Here’s more information on what to do while in Kassiopi, Corfu:

Kassiopi Castle

You will want to make it a priority to visit Kassiopi Castle, a Roman fortress that has ties to Emperor Nero. In order to visit the castle, you will need to make the short climb from the village. However, it is important to be careful and wear the right shoes because the climb itself is steep. Visitors report that the climb itself isn’t necessarily difficult – it’s just fairly steep. Once you get to the top you will be greeted with your first view of the castle, which is fairly expansive. It covers a lot of area, but the castle itself isn’t completely intact. In order to learn more about it, you should consider taking a tour.

Beaches

Like all coastal areas in Greece, there are no shortage of beaches on Corfu. Some of the best of them are located in or near Kassiopi. Even if you are in the area for a short time, you will still have the chance to visit at least one of them. Kalamionas Beach is known for its beautiful sand and waters and there are also sun beds and umbrellas to rent. Bataria Beach is one of the most scenic and has views of a gorgeous mountain range. Pipitos Beach is also worth a visit, but you will need to hike a bit off the road before you reach the beach.

Old Perithia

While in Kassiopi, you should take some time to visit Old Perithia, as well. This is a ghost village that is about 8 kilometers or so away from the larger town. It’s unique in that it was built around the 14th Century A.D and is also no longer inhabited. Thus, all the homes are created in the Venetian style, which was popular on Corfu back during that time period. To get the most out of this site, you should take a bus tour. It’s fun to have someone explain to you the history of this abandoned village. You can also drive here yourself and look around at some of the old buildings.

Because of Kassiopi is by the water, it is an amazing town to spend some time in. Besides doing the above activities, you can pass your days walking through the streets, shopping, visiting tavernas and restaurants, and in general enjoying life on this Greek island.
