About Anafi, Greece

Anafi is an island in the Cyclades group. The capital of the island is Chora, which is built amphitheatrically on the slopes of a hill that face the sea. Agios Nikolaos is the main port of the island. The most developed part of the island of Anafi is the southern part where most beaches are. The beaches are sandy with crystal clear water. Many offer good privacy as well. The highest point of the island is Agios Elios (or Vigla) at 582 meters. The island of Anafi is said to have approximately 181 species of rare flora. Eleonora’s Flacon can be seen on this island as well. It preys on birds that are migrating during the late summer and autumn.

According to Greek mythology, Anafi emerged from the Aegean sea after the Argonauts prayed to Apollo to save them from the angry sea. The island’s name may be derived from this event and the ancient Greek word meaning “to reveal.” The argonauts built a temple dedicated to Apollo to worship him. And he was worshipped all around the island. Remains of the temple can still be found close to the Monastery of Panagia Kalamiotissa.

The island of Anafi was first inhabited by the Phoenicians and then by the Dorians. During the 5th century, the island was conquered by Athens. After the Fourth Crusade in 2014, the Cyclades were taken over by the Venetians. Anafi was granted to Leonardo Foscolo. In the late 1270s, the island of Anafi was recovered by Licario and another Italian renegade for the Byzantine Empire. In 1307, Anafi was captured by Januli Gozzadini who would establish himself as the independent lord of the island.
During the Greek Revolution, the Anafiots sent two fishing boats (Caiques) of men to join the struggle.

From the 1920s, the island of Anafi was used as a place of internal exile for criminals and political dissidents.
