As the largest island in Greece, Crete has no shortage of things to do. Despite its size, the island has a homey and captivating charm that often keeps them coming back for more. The weather here remains gorgeous well into the autumn and people flock here to enjoy the sunshine, beaches, history, and culture. The cuisine here is also unique and is totally centered around the fact that the island is self sustaining. The majority of things eaten here likely originated here.

While on the island, you’ll no doubt want to see the sites. Here’s a look at the best places to visit while on the Greek island of Crete:

Elafonissi Beach

Elafonissi is one of the most popular beaches on the island. It is a physically gorgeous beach that is nestled in a scenic lagoon. The water is warm and inviting, the soft sand will please people of all ages. There are some sun beds and umbrellas here to rent and there are also some services nearby to enjoy. You can easily reach this beach by car, but there is also an option to come here by boat, depending on where you originate on the island.

Minoan Palaces

One of the things that Crete is known for is that it was a main hub for the ancient Minoan civilization. Evidence of these people can be found throughout the island, particularly at the palaces. Knossos Palace, which is located in Heraklion, is one of the most recognizable. However, there are other palaces located at Phaistos, Malia, and Zakros. Most of these are just ruins, but they’re all worth exploring.

Samaria Gorge

If you’re looking for a fun and unique way to experience the outdoors on Crete, you’ll want to consider hiking the Samaria Gorge. The hike originates at the top of the gorge and winds its way down until you make it to the gorgeous black sand beach where you will need to take a ferry. The easiest way to do this is to join a tour group because they provide you with transportation to the trail head and then pick you up after you get dropped off by the ferry.

Old Venetian Harbor

The Old Venetian Harbor, which is located in Chania, is one of the most recognizable landmarks on Crete. This whole area shows evidence of Crete’s Venetian occupation, and it makes for an interesting part of the landscape. When you have time, consider walking the length of the fortress to the end where the tower is perched. There are some incredible views here.

Heraklion Archaeological Museum

There have been a lot of archaeological excavations done on the island of Crete, and it is proof that the history here is a rich one. Most of the artifacts have been removed from the sites in order to be studied and ultimately protected from the elements. Many of them reside in the Archaeological Museum, which is located in Heraklion. You won’t want to miss the chance to visit!

Preveli Beach

You’ll definitely want to log plenty of time at the beach while on Crete. Preveli Beach is one of those places that you won’t want to miss! The beach itself affords great views of the sea and the landscape, and it also makes for a relaxing place to spend some time. There is also a monastery that is perched on a cliff high above the beach. Consider visiting the monastery while here, as well!

Cave of Zeus

If you love the stories of Greek mythology, you’ll want to visit the Cave of Zeus. As the story goes, Cronus was paranoid that one of his children would overthrow him as king of the gods. To prevent this, he swallowed his children whole. However, Zeus’s life was spared because of his mother’s trickery. He was taken to Crete, where he was raised by a nymph named Amalthea. After he came of age, he confronted his father, rescued his siblings from within Cronus, and became the new king of the gods.

As you can see, there are plenty of things to do on Crete. While here, you’ll want to visit at least some of these places!

Heraklion

As the modern-day capital of Crete, Heraklion boasts busy beaches and plenty of attractions. Heraklion is home to the ruins of two palaces, Knossos and Phaistos. Close to Knossos travelers will find the Labyrinth of Crete, which is an over two-mile system of caves from Greek mythology. This city also has excellent weather conditions for watersports. Windsurfing and kitesurfing are popular activities, along with scuba diving. The city has lots of bars with live music so that visitors can enjoy the local culture long into the night. The jewelry in the marketplace is a must-see for eclectic shoppers.

Chania

The former Venetian capital of Crete, Chania, is full of remnants from not only the Venetian period but also the Ottoman empire. The harbor is home to a lighthouse built by an Egyptian architect and draws a regular stream of visitors. Built by the Ottomans, the town mosque is also a major attraction. The city retains its history through several historical and archaeological museums. Nearby, athletic tourists can hike through the more than nine miles of the Samaria Gorge, the largest gorge in Europe. Chania is also known for its eclectic markets, boutiques, and restaurants in the town center.

Rethymmo

Rethymno is the city to visit in Crete for travellers with an interest in history. Located on the western portion of Crete, the city has well-preserved relics and architecture from its Venetian and Byzantine past. The Venetian fortress above the city allows for thrilling views and photo opportunities of the town and the sea. Just walking around the harbor gives visitors a chance to see the history of the island.

Lassithi

The eastern Crete city of Lassithi is a relatively unknown region marked by small villages and beaches. The most popular beach is Vai. It is also the largest beach in Crete. Travelers can also go hiking through the large palm forest leading out to the beach. For an even more remote adventure, visitors can go to the small, uninhabited island of Chrysi. It has a beach with few tourists, white sand, and room to roam. Exploring inland leads visitors to the Cave of Zeus, the mythical birthplace of the Greek god Zeus. Once an ancient site of worship, the cave now serves as a place for tourists to admire unique cave formations.

From ancient ruins to modern nightlife, Crete has a diverse mix of attractions. Each city offers a different view of island life. You should definitely spend time in these cities while in Crete!

Crete is not only the biggest island in Greece, but it is also the southernmost. This means that the weather here is idyllic and the beach-going season is fairly long. It is common to see people flocking to the beaches from May to October and even in the colder times of the year, the climate is still mild. Because of this, people flock here each year to enjoy all that the island has to offer. Some of the beaches stand out more than others, and the top beaches here are considered to be some of the best in Greece.

Here’s a look at some of the best beaches Crete, Greece has to offer:

Vai Beach

Vai Beach is one of the most stunning places in all of Crete. It is located near the village of Sitia and is also fairly close to Agios Nikolaos, a common resort community. It is in a stunning location and is surrounded by Europe’s largest palm tree forest. Besides visiting the beach, you should spend some time in the Palm Forest, which is the only native wild date palm grove in all of Greece. The beach itself boasts soft, golden sand and turquoise blue, sparkling waters.

Preveli Beach

The striking Preveli Beach is located near the main city of Heraklion. This perfect beach is like a tropical lagoon and boasts crystal clear,  greenish waters and soft, powdery sand. The scenery here is gorgeous and visitors are treated to lush vegetation and palm trees, thanks to the nearby Kourtaliotis River, which empties into this beach. Because of the soft sand and stunning scenery, this beach gets a fair amount of visitors.

Elafonissi Beach

Elafonissi is a beautiful beach with pink coral sand and glistening, clear waters. It is located near Chania and is easily accessible by taxi or by taking your own rental car. Because of its serene conditions (it is located at a small inlet), this is one of the more popular beaches on Crete.  There is also a small reef off the coast of this beach and it is possible to dive near it to take a closer look. It gets pretty crowded during the peak summer months so if you really want to visit and dislike crowds, consider going in one of the warmer months that don’t see a lot of tourists, like May or October.

Balos Beach

On the northwestern side of Crete lies the popular beach of Balos, which is especially popular because of its gorgeous conditions. This beach features soft, white sand that stays cool even in the hottest sun, and the waters are especially clear and blue. The beach is essentially a lagoon that can be glimpsed from the nearby hills, so while here, you may also want to spend some time walking the area.  Across from the beach is Gramvoussa, a rocky island with a steep Venetian castle on top of it with views of the remarkable region and sea.

Matala Beach

Matala is one of the prettiest beaches on the island of Crete. Located near Heraklion, this beach has three hundred meters of golden sand. On the right side of the beach, the majestic cliffs and sweeping caves surround the gorgeous beach that was once inhabited by hippies in the 1960s.

Situated to the north of the coast are the famous artificial caves that are carved into rocks that Matala beach is known for. Initially, these caves were housed and used as places of worship. Later on, during the 1st and 2nd centuries, they were used as tombs. Nowadays, the caves are protected by the Archaeological Service.

Sougia Beach

Sougia Beach is situated about seventy kilometers south of Chania and located between the villages of Agia Roumeli and Paleochora.  This beach features a long stretch of coastline and boasts clear blue, sparkling waters and is considered to be one of the purest, most protected beaches in all of Greece. The beach itself is made of fine pebbles, so you’ll want to make sure you have a nice pair of beach sandals to wear as you walk around. This beach is a great place for locals and tourists alike.

Crete has a lot of great beaches and you can’t go wrong with any of them. Consider visiting one of these top beaches during your visit!

The village of Hersonissos in Crete, Greece is one of those places you won’t want to miss. While here,  you may notice the perfect blue water, streaming sunlight, and beautiful people. However, there is so much more to do here than just enjoy the scenery or sit at one of its beaches. This village is one of the many places to enjoy on the island, and each of these places has its own character. Here’s a look at some of the things you can do while in Hersonissos:

Star Beach Water Park

Instead of just sit at the beach, why not try something different? The most popular tourist option is the Star Beach Water Park, which kids love because of its activities like giant slides and bungee jumping. You decide whether to explore the beach or to use the pools and rides if that is more your thing. For adults, Star Beach hosts parties as well, some with a live DJ and foam! Star Beach has a variety of restaurants in the area, so there’s no danger of going hungry.

Explore the Labyrinth Theme Park

The Minoan Civilization left its mark on Crete, and Hersonissos is on of those places where you can explore it. In the hills above Hersonissos, you’ll find The Labyrinth Theme Park, which celebrates Crete’s Minoan culture. Spend an hour or two getting lost in the labyrinth itself, and then choose from a variety of other activities: mini-golf, quad bikes, interactive videos, and eating at the café!

Visit the Aquaworld Aquarium

Do you love to learn about marine life? If so, you’ll want to visit Crete’s first aquarium – the Aquaworld Aquarium. Here, you can explore the marine life most commonly found in the area as well as the Reptile Rescue. This is something that will be good for people of all ages, but if you have children this is especially ideal. You can see and learn about a variety of sea life and reptiles, and even feed and touch some of them! Since many of the reptiles have been rescued, a visit to the aquarium also supports a good cause.

Take a Bike Tour of Crete and Hersonissos

Do you want to tour the area but would rather do something a little more active? Consider taking a bicycle tour of the coast of Hersonissos with a guided tour from Cycling Creta. You can choose from Level 1, which is recommended for younger children and those who rarely bike, to Level 4, which is only for serious mountain bikers. The guides will make plenty of stops, allowing you to take photos, eat, and maybe even swim! The tours take around four hours and Cycling Creta offers a shuttle service.

Explore the Nightlife

A multitude of pubs and night clubs light up the bustling town of Hersonissos every evening. Options range from low-key Irish pubs like Shenanigans, to house music-blasting dance clubs like the New York Club or the Palm Beach Club–almost all located within walking distance of each other. Start your nightlife journey by walking along the eastern coast of Hersonissos and then see where the night takes you!

With so many exciting options on Hersonissos, it can be hard to know where to begin! We hope this guide helps you find the activities that are right for you.

Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands and can sometimes feel like its own country. There are plenty of sites to see on Crete, so a visitor must plan their trip wisely.

Here are our top picks when visiting Crete:

The Palace of Knossos

The Palace of Knossos in Eastern Crete is Crete’s most popular attraction and the most spectacular of the Minoan palaces on the island. The hub of island civilization more than 3,500 years ago, it was excavated by British archeologist Arthur Evans in 1900. The Palace comprised a royal residence, the Minoans’ chief religious center, administrative headquarters, and royal workshops.

Arthur Evans rebuilt large parts of the palace, which now gives you a peek into the sophisticated society of the Minoans who once dominated southern Europe. Buses take visitors here every 10 minutes from Heraklion. Give yourself at least 2 hours to walk through the Palace of Knossos.

Heraklion Archaeological Museum

This Archaeological Museum holds most of the Minoan treasures uncovered during the excavations of the Palace of Knossos and other monuments of Minoan civilization. One of the largest and most important museums in all of Greece, you can find artifacts that are more than 3,000 years old. The top exhibits displays sophisticated frescoes. Be sure to visit early or late in the day to avoid the tour groups passing through. You’ll need at least an hour for a quick walk through, though it’s advisable to give yourself more time.

Historical Museum of Crete

Also located in Heraklion, the Historical Museum of Crete picks up where the Archaeological Museum left off and gives you great insights into the island of Crete. It displays artifacts and art from the early Christian era up to the present. Highlights of the museum include the only two El Greco paintings in Crete, 13th and 14th century frescoes, Venetian gold jewelry, and an exhibit that charts Crete’s road to independence in the early 20th century.

Samaria Gorge

The Samaria Gorge, located in the Hania region of Crete, is Europe’s longest gorge. It begins just below the Omalos Plateau and runs down through an ancient riverbed that flows between the peaks of the Avlimanakou and Volakias mountains to the Libyan Sea. The Samaria Gorge became a national park in 1962 and is home to varied wildlife including birds of prey and it shelters endangered species like Crete’s kri-kri, a wild goat. It is a popular hiking destination and a hike can take anywhere from four to six hours, depending on your speed. Since there is nowhere to stay overnight in the gorge, all hikes must be completed by the time the gate closes each day.

Moni Preveli and Preveli Beach

The Moni Prevali monastery was once a center of anti-Ottoman resistance and was burned by the Turks in 1866. Later, it served as a shelter for Allied soldiers after the battle of Crete in WWII. Today, the monastery features a monument of two bronze sculptures of a gun toting priest and a British soldier overlooking the cliffs. This monument commemorates the role of the monastery during wartime. Just below the monastery lies one of Crete’s best-known beaches, Preveli Beach. Preveli Beach sits at the mouth of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge from where the river Megalopotamos slices across it before emptying into the Libyan Sea. The palm-lined riverbanks have clear freshwater pools for swimming.

While on the Greek island of Crete, you should try some of these activities. They represent some of the best that the island has to offer.

]]>
Lassithi is a tranquil and secluded area on the island of Crete. It gets the least of the tourist activity of the island, which makes it a great place to enjoy a leisurely vacation at your own pace. If you love lounging on the beach and spending time in nature, you won’t be disappointed by what Lassithi has to offer. Getting to Lassithi can be done via the airport in Heraklion. There is an airport 1 km from Lassithi, but there aren’t as many flights available. Once you’ve arrived, you can get around via public transportation or car. Here’s what you can do while visiting Lassithi, Greece.

Here are some great things to do in Lassithi, Greece:

Go Scuba Diving

Whether you’re an experienced diver or wanting to try something new, Lassithi has a number of diving centers including those in Agios Nikolaos, Voulisma Beach, and the island of Agii Pantes just to name a few. The coastline is rich in reefs, caves, shipwrecks, even airplanes, and of course plenty of fish. If scuba diving isn’t for you, you can try snorkeling or take a bottom-glass boat trip. If you want to explore what’s under the water of Lassithi, there is an option to suit you.

Relax on the Beach

Lassithi is home to many beaches. Secluded beaches include: Palekastro, Kato Zakros, and Agia Fotia. If you want to avoid crowds, these are good beaches to consider. At Agia Fotia you will be surrounded by pine forests and the small chapel of Agia Fotia is located nearby. If you want a beach with more amenities or water sports, those are available as well.

Visit Milatos Cave

This cave is rich in history. The cave is large at 73 meters long and 63 meters wide with eight entrances. To reach the cave you will follow a narrow path along the slopes of a gorge. Bring a flashlight with you as the cave is dark. Saint Thomas church is a small church that sits inside the cave. It was built in 1935 to honor the approximately 3,600 people who were slaughtered there by the Turks in 1823 while they attempted to seek shelter. The Turks had trapped them inside for two weeks when the residents of Milatos finally decided to fight back, but were sadly unsuccessful. Each year at the church a service is held in their memory. Milatos Beach is nearby with fish taverns and a fishing port.

Go For a Hike

There is no shortage of places to hike in and around Lassithi. There are a number of gorges including Richtis Gorge. A trail leads to a beautiful waterfall. This area is suitable for the entire family to hike, so feel free to bring the kids. Other gorges to choose from include Gorge of the Dead, Krista Gorge, and Chochlakies Gorge. If you’re looking for more of a park atmosphere, you can check out Amazonas Park. This park is near the top of the mountains and offers a wonderful view.

If you’re looking for a relaxing vacation surrounded by lots of nature and outdoor activities, Lassithi is the perfect place.

Cretan CuisineCrete offers tourists a lot of traditional Greek fare including an assortment of fresh fruits, cheeses, and the famous Greek yogurt. Additionally the island boasts some local cuisine that is a treat for both the locals and those visiting the islands. Due to the fact that Crete is surrounded by water, expect a lot of seafood dishes at restaurants on the island. If seafood isn’t your thing, don’t worry. Cretan cuisine has a lot to offer even to the pickiest of eaters.

While exploring the island of Crete, here are some local Cretan cuisine favorites to look for.

Cheeses

Crete is home to a variety of specialty and artisanal cheeses. These include Graver, a hard smooth cheese that is a blend of sheep’s and goat’s pasteurized milk. It isn’t too sharp but does have a strong distinctive flavor. Another cheese primarily produced on Crete is Myzithra, a creamy white cheese. Mizythra, like Graviera cheese is made of either sheep or goat’s milk. The cheese is soft curd cheese (similar to Italian Ricotta), is white in color and incredibly creamy. Due to the fact salt is not used to make Mizythra; it has a naturally sweet taste and is often used in baking. In fact, Mizythra is a main component in Bougatsa, one of Crete’s famous pastries.

Bougatsa (Greek Custard Pie)

Bougatsa is a pastry famous in Crete, specifically in the city of Chania. The pastry is made by layering sheets of filo dough and then wrapping creamy custard filling (often made with Mizythra cheese), and baked. Bougatsa can be made with sweet semolina custard or savory fillings like minced meat. However for a true taste of Crete, opt for the Mizythra filled Bougatsa. After wrapping the cheese custard filling in the filo dough, the pastry is baked until golden brown and then dusted with cinnamon and confectionary sugar. Enjoy a Bougatsa for breakfast, a snack, or dessert. You’ll be happy you did.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is synonymous with Greece and Mediterranean cuisine. Cretan olive oil is well known on not only the island but across Greece, as it is heavier and richer than other varieties. Olive oil actually has historical ties to Crete. The Minoans, who inhabited Crete back in 2500 BC, first cultivated the olive tree. Over time, olive oil became a crucial component of the Cretan economy.

Wine

Another Cretan export with Minoan ties, there is historical evidence that the Minoans made wine on Crete as far back as 1600 BC. When the Romans took over the island, Cretan wine including a sweet wine called Protropos was exported to Italy. While on the island, take advantage of a variety of locally produced wines including Boutari Kritikos, a crisp white wine which complements the island’s coastal cuisine perfectly. Crete also hosts its own spirit, and no it’s not Ouzo. Tiskouthia is”firewater” made from fermented grape skins. More commonly referred to as Raki, the drink is served all day usually with a dish of raisins or walnuts covered in honey. Another dish served with Raki is Ravani, a farina cake. Boasting a strong anise-like flavor, Raki is often provided at the end of a meal for free by restaurants on Crete.

]]>
Crete is the biggest island in Greece, and as a result of this, there is so much to see and do. There are plenty of amazing beaches, gorgeous cities and villages to explore, and plenty of historical landmarks and museums to keep you busy while here. Whether the time you have to spend on the island is limited, or you are there for an extended stay, it can still be a challenge to find the right ways to spend your time.

There are some experiences, however, that you should prioritize. Here’s a look at some of the best experiences to have while on Crete:

Hike the Samaria Gorge

If you love hiking and beautiful scenery, you won’t want to miss the chance to hike the Samaria Gorge. This is the longest gorge in Europe, and it is filled with stunning and spectacular views. The hike usually begins at the top. Once you make it down to the gorge, you will be treated to a long, flat walk with plenty of scenery. The hike empties into a village where there is a gorgeous, black sand beach. People typically board the ferry to head back to Chania.

Tour Knossos Palace

The island of Crete is known for its Minoan ruins. The Minoan Civilization from early, Ancient Greece was surprisingly sophisticated and highly successful for hundreds of years, until it all came to an end. Most of the palaces remain standing in some form, although some are more intact than others. Knossos Palace was, by far, the most impressive of them. Although the palace is largely in ruins, it is an interesting site to visit.

Visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum

If you are interested in the ruins of Crete, particularly of Knossos Palace, you won’t want to miss this museum! Many of the artifacts found at the site of this palace, and other archaeological digs throughout the island, can be found here. Are you looking for a great place to take your family in Greece? The island of Crete has a lot to offer and the island is incredibly family friendly. Whether you go hiking, enjoy the beach, visit a historical site or museum, or eat some delicious food, there is no shortage of things that families can enjoy together on this island. Here’s a look at some of the top family activities to take part in:

Scuba Diving

It can be fun to explore the island underwater! There are several popular dive locations located on this island, and you don’t need to have experience in order to enjoy it. Many of the dive centers on the island have training programs, equipment rentals, and guided tours. Be sure to call the dive centers in advance to make sure that they have resources for you and your family to enjoy according to your skill levels.

Some of the popular diving locations on the island include the Bay of Afrata in Chania, Hersonissos Cape, Panormous Village in Rethymnon, and the Nikolos Reef in Lasithi. Consider hiring a guide to take you through some of the most common sites. The benefit of this is that the guide can make sure you and your family stay safe.

Hiking

Because there is a mountain range on Crete, there is no shortage of hiking opportunities available. While there are plenty of trails located throughout the island, some are better suited for families than others. One of the most popular hikes on the island is the Samaria Gorge. Although this is a long, often technically difficult hike, this is still a doable experience for families since there are plenty of resources along the way.

People typically begin their experience at the visitor’s center at the top and then end it in the village below where they take a ferry back to Chania. There are water stations located throughout the trail and also opportunities for rescue along the way if you can’t make it. There are usually rangers patrolling the area with donkeys who will take people back to safety and out of the gorge.

Other great hikes families can do on Crete include the Elafonisi Viewpoint, Mili Gorge, Sword Mountain, and the Askyfou Trail. Consider joining a tour group to do some of these hikes because tours have resources at their disposal that will make the experience more enjoyable for you and your while family.

Biking

Hiking isn’t the only way to get around the trails of Crete. This island is also a popular mountain biking destination. Many of the same trails that can be used for hiking can also be biked on. However, this isn’t always the case – you’ll want to check the rules for the trails. Not only that, but bicycles can be ridden through the villages and give you a more expansive overview of the culture. It is also the perfect family activity. There are opportunities to rent bikes throughout the island, but especially in cities like Chania and Heraklion. You can also join a bike tour, which is an especially family friendly choice.

The Greek island of Crete is perfect for families and is a great outdoor destination. You should try some of these activities while here!

Lassithi, on the island of Crete, is still mostly untouched by mass tourism. It is a region that boasts rich natural beauty and impressive history. The monasteries of Lassithi, Greece are brimming with history and beauty. Here are some of the monasteries you can explore when visiting Lassithi.

Monastery of Toplou

The 15th century Monastery of Toplou is located in the Lassithi region of Crete. It is close to the Vai Palm Forest. Sadly, the Monastery of Toplou was destroyed during the earthquake of 1612. It was reconstructed by the Venetians, but would be destroyed yet again during the Ottoman occupation. The name Toplou came about during Turkish rule and has been attributed to the Turkish word top, which means “cannon-ball” or “bullet.” This refers to the cannons that were added to the monastery by the Venetians.

The Monastery of Toplou would continue to develop and gained stravropegiac status. During World War II when the Germans occupied, guerilla fighters and monks who were hiding at the monastery were executed. The Monastery of Toplou is a fortified monastery with 10 meter high walls and a main gate that is equipped with a hidden area for monks to pour lead or hot oil onto intruders. When you visit the Monastery of Toplou, you can admire the northern aisle at the Catholic section, which is part of the original monastery adorned with beautiful frescoes.

 Monastery of Panagia Kroustallenia

Built on a hill near the Village of Agios Konstantinos in the plateau of Lassithi, the Monastery of Panagia Kroustallenia is one of the most historical monasteries on the island of Crete. The monastery was founded in 1241, but it is thought to have been built between 961 ans 1204. Tradition says that the name of the monastery is derived from the icon of Virgin Mary that was found in a cave nearby.

The icon was carved in crystal. During Ottoman rule, much of the Monastery of Panagia Kroustallenia was destroyed, so the complex consists of building from the 20th century. In 1272, the monastery was the site of rebel meetings against the Venetians. Twenty years later, the Venetians evacuated the Lassithi Plateau and the Monastery of Panagia Kroustallenia was destroyed.

Monastery of Kapsa

Located 40 km from the town of Sitia, the Monastery of Kapsa built against steep grey-red rocks that overlook the Libyan Sea. The Monastery of Kapsa is though to have been founded during the 15th century, but the exact date is unknown. Until 1841, the Monastery of Kapsa was just a small chapel that was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist along with a few cells. The monastery was destroyed by the Ottomans, but has since been renovated.

The courtyard and the lobby of the monastery are both decorated with stone mosaics in the ground. There are beautifully carved icons and replicas of John the Baptists, Basil the Great, Modesto, and others. An important part of the Monastery of Kapsa is the cave where Joseph Gerontogiannis lived for 17 years.

Monasteries are a big part of the history and culture of Greece. You’ll want to visit some of them while spending time in Lasithi.

Crete is an idyllic Greek island that seems to have the perfect weather. Aside from visiting the beaches and seeing the sites, there are also religious experiences to be had here, as well. The island has a long-standing religious history, and Christianity was established here early in its history. There are still plenty of monasteries there today that are worth visiting. Here’s more information:

Chrissoskalitissa Monastery

Located on the southwestern side of the town of Chania, this white settlement rests on a cliff overlooking the beach in the village of Elafonisi. Chrissoskalitissa means “golden steps” and refers to a legend that one of the steps leading to the monastery appears golden to those with pure hearts. This monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

In the present day, the Monastery of Chrissoskalitissa is a famous site of pilgrimage on Crete. It also features a museum of folklore with instruments, tools, and memorials of the Cretan Revolution.

Gonia Monastery

This monastery, originally founded by Zealot monks in the 9th century, overlooks the Cretan Sea on a hill near Kolimbari. Frequent pirate invasions led to a brief relocation, before the current structure was built in the 17th by the monk Vlassios. He had been given a vision of the monastery.

Visit the Gonia Monastery to investigate its large collection of 15th and 17th century relics, icons, and other religious objects. This monastery remains an important religious site due to the close proximity of the Orthodox Academy of Crete.

Monastery of Kroustalenia

Built on a hill nearest to the village of Agios Konstantinos, this monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, as well. Originally built by the Venetians, it was rebuilt by nuns from Peloponnese. The monastery was again destroyed during the Greek War of Independence by the Turks. Not 50 years later, the complex was once more destroyed and later became the site of a German concentration camp during World War II.

Only a few monks call the Monastery of Kroustalenia home today. It remains, however, as a unique cultural landmark marked by historic changes from long ago and more recently during the 1940s.

Toplou Monastery

On the northeastern side of Crete, this monastery rises up like a castle in a remote location near Palekastro. When it was first built in the 15th century, it was called Panagia Akrotiriani, or Virgin Mary of the Lighthouse. Much of the surrounding lands belong to the monastery in order to retain the natural landscape.

A highlight of the Toplou Monastery is the collection of Byzantine icons on display to the public. Other exhibits provide background to the daily lives of monks and the role of Toplou monastery during the Byzantine era.

There are some interesting, historical monasteries that can be found on the island of Crete. Each of these are worth visiting during your time on the island. Just be sure to dress properly while there and to follow the rules. For example, monasteries often have a dress code.

The city of Chania, which is located on the island of Crete, is a city of history, culture, and unrivaled beauty. It is an older city and there is evidence of times past, such as the Venetian fortress, built during Venetian occupation, and an old mosque, which was built during Turkish occupation. While on the island of Crete, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit this gorgeous place. Here are some of the prominent attractions and beaches to explore when in Chania.

Elafonisi Beach

Elafonisi Beach is a small islet connected to Crete by a shallow reef. This reef can be crossed when the waters are calm. This is one of the most beautiful areas in Crete. Elefonisi is oblong-shaped and features sand that is white and pink and water that is turquoise. The beach of Elafonisi is rich in dunes, junipers, and sand lilies. The beach has been declared a protected area under Natura 2000 as the Caretta Caretta turtles nest on the islet. You will not want to miss this unique and breathtaking beach in Chania, Greece.

Fortress of Frangokastello

Built in 1371, the Fortress of Frangokastello is one of the most well-preserved Venetian fortresses in Crete. The fortress was built to protect that bay from pirate invasions. It wasn’t used or this purpose as much as intended when it was built though. The Venetians had a military base for their army and the fortress was used as a base for attacks in the inland of Crete who was still resistant to Venetian rule.

The Fortress of Frangokastello was originally named Castle of Saint Nikitas in honor of a nearby church. The locals would later rename it. The Fortress of Frangokastello was built in a rectangular shape with large, strong towers at each corner. There is a large gate that features the coat of arms that symbolizes Venetian bravery. The buildings and fortifications that you see inside the walls were completed by the Turks during their rule.

Falassarna Beach

Located 58 km from Chania Town and near the village of Platanos, Falassarna Beach is a must-see. The bay of Falassarna consists of 5 consecutive beaches. The sand is white and the water are turquoise. The area can get windy making it ideal for windsurfing. The beach features a water sports center, beach bars, umbrellas, and sun beds. This lovely beach has been recognized for its cleanliness. If you’re looking for a tranquil beach to spend time at where you can enjoy a little adventure if you choose, Falassarna Beach in Chania, Greece is perfect for you.

Church of Agios Nikolaos

Built by the Venetians in 1320, the Church of Agios Nikolaos is one of the most important religious monuments in Chania. The Church of Agios Nikolaos was constructed as a convent of the old Dominican friary. During Ottoman rule, the church was converted into the main mosque of the city and the Christians converted it into a Christian basilica that is dedicated to Agios Nikolaos, the patron saint of sailors. The church features a cross-vaulted arcade and two balconies. The Church of Agios Nikolaos is located near Splantzia Square where you will find coffee shops and places to sit under the shade of a large plane tree.

Chania, Greece has much to offer visitors of all ages. While in the city, you won’t want to miss the chance to see some of the sites!

Although Crete is part of Greece, the island has a unique charm all its own. The biggest island in Greece, Crete is home to many beautiful, coastal beaches. Since the island is so large, you could spend a whole summer exploring the beaches and not even scratch the surface.

If you find yourself in Rethymno, one of the cities on the island, you will find that you won’t be able to resist spending time at the beach. Here’s a look at some of the top beaches in the area:

Agia Galini Beach

Agia Gallina Beach is located in the Bay of Messara, which is essentially located at the base of a steep hill. You can take advantage of free umbrellas and sunbeds as long you buy food or a drink from the nearby Ammo Bar. The best way to make the most of Agia Galini Beach is to park at the top of the hill and walk down the stone path so you can enjoy majestic views.

After you relax at the beach, you can visit the shops and restaurants in the village. The only negatives here are a lot of boats in the bay and a steep climb back up the hill to your car. On the plus side, because of its location, this beach could feel

Bali Beach

You’re going to find a lot to do in Bali Beach, but this can also be confusing for some people because Bali Beach consists of four separate beaches. Here’s more information:

  • Limani Beach  has a lot of quaint restaurants and shops nearby to visit before or after visiting the actual beach. The beach itself is not very big, but it’s clean and well organized.
  • Karavostasis Beach has a small bay but is the most scenic of the four Bali beaches. However, it’s crowded and not as well maintained as the others.
  • Livadi Beach is your best bet if you’re looking for a beach with a lot of people and a lot of energy. The beach isn’t as scenic as the others, but it’s well maintained, especially for the amount of people that visit.
  • Varkotopos Beach is also crowded, but it’s more scenic than Livadi Beach. Since the water is shallow here, this is the best option of the four if you’re visiting with children.

Preveli Beach

Preveli Beach is a lot more than just a beach – there is a lot to do here. The beach itself is clean and lined by palm trees, and there is a 500-foot path to the beach that offers pretty views. This beach is pebbly so come prepared. The water here is deep so it’s not best suited for families and better for adults. You will also want to take advantage of the river and palm forest. The river is very cold, but that makes it ideal for summer months when you want to cool off.

Panormos Beach

Panormos Beach offers crystal clear water and soft sand. If you’re looking for a pure beach, this should be your #1 choice. This beach is also more of a hidden treasure and not as crowded as the others. Additionally, there are no motorized water sports, which keeps it tranquil. That said, it’s not recommended if you visit in June due to the wind.

Plakias Beach

Plakias Beach is different from the others because of its dark sand. It’s a little rocky here, but it’s worth it because you can rent an umbrella and sunbed and there are caves to explore. Once again, the umbrella and sunbed are free if you buy food and drink from the Ammo Beach Bar. Also, because of the clear water, this is a great spot to go snorkeling. This is a bigger beach, which allows for more space, but the water can get rough, which means it’s not the best option for kids.

While in Rethymno, Crete, you will definitely want to visit at least some of these beaches!

Crete is one of those islands that seems as if it can stand on its own. Seemingly isolated from the rest of Greece, there’s certainly plenty to do. In fact, there are so many beaches on the island, it can be hard to pick which ones to visit. If you’re staying near Heraklion, you won’t want to miss these top beaches. Here’s more information about where you should go:

Matala Beach

Located just 67 kilometers southwest of Heraklion, Matala Beach is one of Crete’s more widely popular areas and for good reason. Visitors can rent bamboo umbrellas and sun beds for use right on the golden sand beach, which is accented by a towering cliff face. Caves leading into the face of that cliff were once used by hippies and other drifters. Although they’re long gone, it can be interesting to observe them. This beach is excellent for swimming, surfing, snorkeling, and even scuba diving.

Tymbaki Beach

Just a few kilometers further down the coast is Tymbaki, which is close to both Heraklion and the village that bears its name. This beach is made up of small pebbles and is a great place to relax and enjoy the sunshine. However, this beach isn’t the best choice for families with small children or those who like to swim. The high winds generate waves that could be dangerous. Because of this, though, the beach is a haven for those who love water sports, such as surfing.

Agia Pelagia Beach

Located northwest of Heraklion, Agia Pelagia is another welcoming village with a long, golden brown sandy beach. A calmer beach, due to natural protection from high winds, this beach also offers rental accommodations for those wishing to stay longer than one afternoon. The village of Agia Pelagia features a tourist area with a host of taverns to liven up the evenings spent away from the sand and shore.

Lygaria Beach

Lygaria Beach offers a soft sand beach just 23 kilometers northwest of Heraklion. The beach is narrow, but relaxing with calm, warm waters for swimmers and snorkelers. Surrounded by grassy hills, the beach is supplied with parasols and chairs for visitors to use at their leisure. Between the shore and the hills, a line of shops, cares, taverns, and rental accommodations make Lygaria Beach a one-stop destination for sun-worshipping tourists.

Amoudara Beach

Located in the Gulf of Heraklion, Amoudara Beach can be found five miles west of the capital, along the north coast. While this area doesn’t boast as many amenities as some of the other beaches on this list, the smooth, golden sand and calm, blue waters more than make up for the lack of amenities. In fact, this beach was awarded the EU Blue Flag award for its pristine, clean waters. There are a few offerings, as far as accommodations and taverns in the village near the beach.

From popular sands to more secluded shores, these beaches offer a little something for everyone. In fact, these beaches are popular amongst locals and tourists alike!

Crete is the largest island in Greece and one of the largest in the whole Mediterranean. This means that when you visit, you’ll need to choose your activities wisely! If you happen to decide to spend the majority of your vacation in the Elounda area, you will be treated to amazing views, gorgeous beaches, and plenty of things to do. Here are some things you can do in or near Elounda, Crete during your visit:

Visit Spinalonga

Spinalonga, or Kalydon, is a small island off the coast of Crete by Elounda that has an interesting past. There was a time when Spinalonga actually wasn’t a separate island – it was attached to Crete. However, over time, the water levels rose and it became an island of its own. During the Venetian occupation of Crete, the area was commonly used to harvest salt. It was also used as a leper colony. Now, the island is a top residence for tourists, who love exploring the pebbled beaches and old fortress that once housed Greece’s lepers.

Spend Time at the Beach

Elounda has some of Crete’s most beautiful beaches, which means that when you visit here, you’ll want to find time to enjoy at least one. Elounda Beach, Plaka Beach, and Kolakitha Beach are all worthwhile choices because they each have their own, unique scenery. If you want a beach that is on the quieter side, you may want to consider Elounda Beach, which tends to have a quiet, family atmosphere.

Take the Happy Train

Are you looking for a fun way to tour the surrounding area? The Happy Train tours are a great option. Each of the tours have you riding through the surrounding area on a small train, and they’ll give you a nice overview of some of the major tourist attractions. You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to take photos and some of the tours even stop so that you can eat some traditional Cretan cuisine.

Visit the Sunken City of Oulos

The area surrounding Elounda has some interesting geographical features, as well. One of the most unique is Oulos, which is also referred to as the “Sunken City.” At one time, the city was well above sea level, but this is no longer the case. It’s interesting to view some of the historical buildings in the city, such as the fortress walls, which currently stand only a few inches above the sea. Much of it is difficult to see on land, though, but this is considered to be an excellent location for snorkeling.

Enjoy Water Sports

Are you tired of sitting at the beach and lounging in the sun? If you want a change of pace, consider engaging in some water sports! Elounda is a perfect place to do things like snorkel, scuba dive, wakeboard, water ski, and more. Your best bet is to hire a guide to help you find all the best spots. Many of the adventuring companies in the area have packages for beginners, as well.

While in Elounda, Crete you won’t want to miss these activities!

Hersonissos. Crimea

Crete is one of those places that has a lot to offer. As Greece’s largest island, there are wealth of experiences you can have. In fact, on any given day you could decide to spend your time in a quiet mountain village, sit on a relaxing beach, or take in the bustling city life in a place like Chania or Heraklion. But for those who want to spend their days lounging in a relaxing seaside resort, Hersonissos is the place to be!

Hersonissos is a town on the northernmost coast of Crete. It’s known for its languid atmosphere, thriving traditional life, and ancient past. The ancient town of Chersonesos is located inside the resort town’s current borders. Though much has changed between then and now, one thing has remained the same – the Mediterranean sun and the opportunity people staying in Hersonissos have to enjoy it.

Getting to Hersonissos

In order to get to Hersonissos you can take an airplane or a ferry. The closest airport and port are both in Heraklion, which is an easy thirty-minute drive from Hersonissos. Once you arrive, you can rent a car, take a bus, or take a taxi. If you want the greatest amount of freedom, you may want to consider renting a car. In order to rent a car in Greece, you may need to get an international driver’s license. Before you leave for your trip. Check with the rental car company to see if one of these licenses is truly needed.

Great Destination for Families

One thing that sets this resort town apart from others is the distinct families feel that it has. Like most Greek tourist areas, there is some nightlife. However, that’s not what dominates this resort community. Families flock here year after year to give their kids a chance to enjoy the Greek sun and beaches without the hectic feel of the resort communities that are known for their nightlife. Aside from spending time playing at the beach, there are plenty of things for families to do such as explore the ancient ruins and visit a local aquarium, the (Aqua World Aquarium), which gives kids a hands on approach to learning about the local sea life.

Visit Area Museums

Another thing you can do while visiting this part of Crete is visit area museums, which is an activity that is great for adults and kids alike. For example, the Lychnostatis Open Air Museum is a great tribute to the early people of the island, including information about their lifestyles and their trade history. Also, the museum has an herbarium and workshops on making olive oil and ceramics.

After you spend the day sightseeing and enjoying the area beaches, it’s time to enjoy a bit of the real culture on Crete by enjoying a traditional meal. The food on this island is fresh and rich with local flavor, and the restaurants found in Hersonissos live up to this reputation. Finish your delicious meal with a taste of traditional raki and your day will be complete!
