Santorini. What attracted you to Santorini in the first place? If you’re like most people, you saw a few wonderful photographs of the beautiful, white washed buildings or of the amazing sunset. Or maybe people told you that visiting Santorini was one of the best vacations they ever took, and now you want to experience it for yourself. No matter what your reasons are, Santorini exceeds expectations. It’s every bit as beautiful as the photographs make it look and the sunsets truly are that amazing. With that being said, there’s a lot more to the island than that! Here are some activities you absolutely need to do while on Santorini.

Go Hiking in Fira

While many people are attracted to Fira because of the shops, restaurants and amazing views, there’s another activity that people often underestimate. The famous hiking trail along the water in Fira offers a great way to experience the views from a more hands on perspective. The trail connects Fira and Oia, two popular Santorini destinations. Since Oia has some of the best sunsets on the island, you may want to time your hike so that you can glimpse the sunset from some of the more iconic viewpoints. If you plan to do the whole thing, make sure you give yourself plenty of time.

Watch the Sunset

As mentioned above, Oia is the home of the most famous sunset in all of Santorini. Visitors have long realized that the light hits the horizon in a way that makes the sky light up! Since it’s such a popular spot, you’ll want to get here early so that you can reserve a space before the crowds trickle on. Also, Oia isn’t the only place on Santorini that has an amazing sunset. As long as the part of the island is on the west, you’ll be greeted with a beautiful display of color as the sun dips below the horizon. In fact, some of the more out of the way places will give you some of the best photographs.

Take a Boat Tour

Santorini is one of the most unique islands in all of Greece because it has actually been built on an extinct volcano. In fact, it has been populated since Minoan times, and back then, the volcano was still active. The center of the island actually collapsed during a particularly violent volcanic eruption, and many think that Santorini was the physical location of the fabled “Atlantis”. Anyway, taking a boat tour of the island is the best way to glimpse the unique geography that was shaped by the volcano so long ago. A good boat tour will not only show you the geography, but also educate you on the history, as well. You can also charter a sailboat or a yacht to explore the waters on your own.

Visit the Beach

Even though much of the island is located on the actual rim of the volcano, Santorini still has some gorgeous beaches. In fact, the beaches are the best place to view the island’s volcanic past. Red beach, for example, features red sand that was shaped from volcanic lava eons ago. Other beaches to visit include Kamari Beach, White Beach, and Monolithos Beach.

Santorini is one of the most popular of all the Greek islands and for good reason. It is very picturesque, boasts some amazing sunsets, and there are plenty of things to do while on the island. Some of the most popular activities include lounging on the beach, visiting the shops, seeing some of the landmarks, and eating some traditional food. However, you don’t need to stick with these typical activities in order to see the island. These unique activities are also worth doing during your stay. Here’s more information:

Rent a Quad Bike (4-Wheeler)

Another great way you can explore Santorini is driving a quad bike, also known as a 4-wheeler. There are many quad bikes available for rent throughout the island. It is easy to ride it since you do not need to pedal it. The other great thing is it does not fall when you stop it. You enjoy the ride since the roads here are big enough, so you can travel along with cars and trucks at the speed you want.

If you want to be accompanied by a friend or a photographer, no need to worry you can get a 310cc quad bike. As you ride you can decide to stop at Black Beach and enjoy viewing a black sand beach or Santa Irini bakery to enjoy snacks. In addition, you enjoy the red beach, teal and turquoise water, reddish sand and the red rocks. You can also decide to pass through other towns in Santorini and enjoy the great sights.

Hike from Fira to Oia

Why not see some of the island by foot instead of getting around by taxi? One of the ways you can explore the area is by enjoying a hike from Fira to Oia. As you enjoy the hike, you go through different villages including Oia, Firostefani, Fira and Imerovigli. In addition, you also go along the caldera cliff. The hike takes you two to five hours, but this is determined by your speed and the times you stop on the way. In case you take a side trip to Skaros rock, you can take an extra hour. Hiking from Fira to Ohio offers you a memorable experience since you go through a dirt path and areas with cobblestone. If you are planning to take the hike during the summer, you need to begin the hike early since by 11am it gets very hot. There are shops and restaurants you can buy items that you require such as water, snacks, foods and other drinks.

Take a Boat Tour

Do you want to see the island from a completely different perspective? If you like to enjoy boat tours of the volcano, you can do that in Santorini. The boat tours give you an opportunity to have a great view of caldera cliffs. Here you can enjoy different activities such as exploring the villages, swimming in the hot springs, hike the volcano, stop at white and red beach to swim and take time to enjoy watching the sunset below Oia. The good thing is that most of the boat tours offer onboard meals, so you can enjoy your favorite food and alcohol.

Take a Helicopter Ride

In Santorini, you can decide to hit new heights by enjoying a helicopter flight. Here you have a great time as you have perfect aerial views of the Island, unique natural features, white washed villages and taking photos from a perfect vantage point. In addition, you enjoy the great views of red and black sand beaches, secluded bays and hideaway coves.

These are some ideas for exploring the island of Santorini in a different way. You should consider doing one of them during your vacation to the island!

Santorini is one of the most unique places to visit in Greece, mostly because of its unique landscape. Because of the island’s past volcanic activity, this has impacted the appearance of the beaches. Colored sand, crystal blue waters, and an interesting landscape are a few things you will have to look forward to when you and your family visits the beaches. Here’s a look at some of the best beaches Santorini has to offer families:

Perivolos Beach

Perivolos Beach is a great place for families to visit because of how well organized it is. The beach is about 3 km from the town of Perissa on the southern side of Santorini and is easily accessible by car or bus. You can walk from Perissa Beach to Perivolos Beach to Agios Georgios Beach which are all connected. The beach includes many amenities convenient for families including beach chairs with umbrellas, lifeguards, showers, public restrooms, and beach volleyball courts. Water sports such as windsurfing, jet skiing, and scuba diving are some of the activities available on the beach. Many shops, cafes and restaurants are situated along the waterfront.

Kamari Beach

If you’re looking for a great beach with a unique landscape the whole family can enjoy, Kamari Beach is the place to be! Located on the island’s east coast 10 km southeast of Fira, the scenic view from the beach includes a large rock outcropping called Mesa Vouno Mountain. A long promenade along the waterfront has many hotels, shops, cafes, and restaurants. Lounge chairs and umbrellas are available along the beach. Kamari has diving centers that offer lessons for beginners and dive excursions for all ages and skill levels. Water skiing, wind surfing, paddle boating, and surfing are all available at Kamari.

Perissa Beach

Perissa Beach is about 13 km from Fira on the southeast coast at the base of Mesa Vono Mountain. Hotels in Kamari and Perissa allow you to stay close enough to the beach for convenient swimming. Perissa Beach also offers diving centers for lessons and group excursions. The beach includes lifeguards, lounge chairs and umbrellas, showers, and a playground.

There are supermarkets and campsites that are less expensive options for families staying in the area. Kid-friendly activities in Perissa include a water park and mini-golf. Perisssa can be pretty touristy in the most popular season, but it is one of the most popular because it offers such a variety of activities.

Red Beach

Red Beach is one of the most unique beaches in all of Greece and it is also a convenient choice from Fira, the main town on the island. The best feature of Red Beach is the photogenic scenery. As the name implies, the most impressive feature of Red Beach is the color of the red sand and red lava cliffs. Red Beach doesn’t offer facilities or organized water sports, but there are lounge chairs and umbrellas on the beach, and rock formations make for interesting snorkeling. Red Beach is smaller and less accessible than some of the other beaches, but worth the trip for those wanting spectacular views and photo opportunities.

Whether your family is interested in picturesque scenery, water sports, sightseeing, people watching, or just lounging in the sun, the beaches of Santorini have something for everyone to enjoy on your Greek vacation.

Santorini is one of those charming Greek islands that people love. The scenery is unique to that island alone. The volcanic activity is evident throughout the island, such as with the black sand beaches or the way the main parts of the island are perched on top of the volcano itself. It has been thousands of years since the volcano erupted and for now, the island is one of the top tourist destinations.

Besides doing the usual activities while here, such as lounge at the beach and enjoy the nightlife, there are other things to do. The island has plenty of museums, and these are some of the ones you’ll definitely want to visit:

Gyzi Megaron Museum

There was a time when wealthy families flocked to the island of Santorini, and during this time, it was fashionable for them to own massive homes. The Gyzi Megaron Museum is housed in one of these former homes. The collection in the museum is focused on sharing local folk art and culture not only for the island, but for all of Greece.

Santorini Wine Museum

The island of Santorini has unique growing conditions, thanks to its history of volcanic eruptions. Much of the soil on the island originated from volcanic ash, which has unique properties that make it ideal for growing certain types of grapes. As a result of that, the wines on the island are considered to be some of the best in Greece. This museum showcases the tradition of wine making on the island and in all of Greece.

Tomato Industrial Museum

Grapes aren’t the only crops that grow well in the volcanic ash of this island. Santorini is also the home to a uniquely sweet tomato that thrives in the climate. This crop has been important to the island because it has not only shaped its cuisine but also provided a source of revenue for the islanders. This museum celebrates the tomato and its importance to the industry on the island.

Argyros Museum

Built in an old mansion, the Argyros Museum is another place you’ll want to visit. Not only is this a great place to enjoy some of the history of the island, but it is also a good example of an architectural style that was also part of the history of the island. This is a great place to visit if you want to get a feel for what life was like on Santorini in the 1800’s and has many cultural pieces that go along with that time period.

Museum of Prehistoric Thera

It is no secret that Santorini is an island with a rich history. Thera is the site of a major archaeological dig on the island, and it has been invaluable in helping historians understand more about the way the island was in ancient times. This museum houses artifacts that were found in digs on the island and also enlightens us about the ancient history of the island.

As you can see, there are plenty of museums on Santorini to enjoy during your visit!

The stunning Santorini makes a stunning backdrop for your trip to Greece. This oasis mixes scenic natural beauty, an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities, distinct white-washed buildings, and sparkling ocean waters set against the brilliant blue sky. Santorini will impress even the most discerning traveler. Before you set off on your Santorini adventure, you’ll want to consider having at least one of these experiences:

Watch the Sunset

You would be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful place to take in an island sunset than on Santorini. All of the island’s natural elements combine to create romantic sunset viewing from all over Santorini. While there are a host of amazing places to catch the sun sinking into the ocean in the distance, the quaint village of Oia boasts a well-earned reputation as offering some of the most magnificent sunsets. Or take to the water to watch the day come to an end while on a sunset cruise. Wherever you decide to watch the legendary Santorini sunset, you will be in for a treat.

Experience the Caldera

A volcanic explosion over 3,500 years ago on the island of Santorini led to the creation of this natural wonder. Visitors from all over the world come to view this geological configuration. The 4-mile caldera is best viewed from either Oia or the capital city of Fira. Both locations offer a myriad of restaurants, hotel accommodations, and other amenities designed to deliver the perfect jumping off point for your caldera exploration. Visitors to Fira can even choose to ride a donkey to the summit of the caldera, providing breathtaking views along the way.

Visit the Volcano and Hot Springs

In addition to the caldera, Santorini also features two small islets of black lava. Nea Kameni is especially known for the healing waters of its hot springs. The high amount of sulfur in the Agios Nikolaos islet is heralded for its therapeutic powers. Because many of the villages of Santorini are located high on the towering cliffs, visitors can take in the sweeping views of the volcanoes and their islets. The island’s largest volcano, Palea Kameni, also features healing hot springs.

Go to the Beach

No trip to Santorini is complete without spending a significant amount of time at any of its many beautiful beaches. Vlychada Santorini features a long stretch of sandy beach complete with loungers perfect for putting your feet up and relaxing. When you are looking for a remote beach experience, look no further than Cape Columbo. This isolated stretch of beach is located 10 kilometers from Fira and boasts towering red cliff formations that overlook the warm waters. Or choose the famous Red Beach and its exceptional snorkeling opportunities under the distinct landscape of red and black volcanic rock formations.

Santorini is one of those islands that has a lot to offer. Although there is a lot to do, the scenery is definitely a standout. While here, you will want to make it a priority to visit some of these gorgeous places.

]]>
Santorini is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. It was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the world. The Minoan eruption occurred approximately 3,600 years ago. The explosion was as strong as 40 atomic bombs and produced 40 foot tsunamis. The eruption left meters of ash that surrounded a large caldera. The soil of the island is now a mix of volcanic ash, pumice stone, and pieces of solidified lava. The island’s volcanic history has resulted in unique beaches. Here are five volcanic beaches you can see when visiting Santorini:

Kamari Beach

Kamari beach is also known as “black beach” due to its black sand. It also boasts a large rock known as Mount Vouno, which is a sight to see in the day light, but is especially amazing when it shines in the dark. The water is blue and deep and there is a lifeguard on duty. If you’re interested in seeing the caldera, this is the beach you want to visit as you don’t have to go far to take a tour.

Red Beach

Not far from the Bronze Age Minaon settlement ruins of Akrotiri is Red beach. This is a small beach that is surrounded by tall bright red cliffs. The red and black pebble-like sand, which is volcanic rock, make this beach a must-see. If you’re into water sports, snorkeling would be perfect at this beach thanks to the interesting rocks.

Monolithos Beach

Monolithos beach is close to Kamari beach. It is an organized beach made of black, but smooth, sand and shallow waters. Monolithos beach is known for being a family friendly beach. Not only is there plenty of space on the beach itself, but there’s a children’s play area and basketball court nearby as well as numerous hotels, restaurants, and shops.

Perissa Beach

Perissa beach is another that is made of black volcanic sand. It’s important to bring footware if you are visiting during the day as the sand becomes hot. A feature of this beach is Mount Vousa. The enormous rock is something you may want to get a closer look, but even from a distance it will take your breath away. Amenities are available nearby. Perissa beach considered one of the best swimming beaches on Santorini.

Perivolos Beach

Perivolos beach is basically a continuation of Perissa beach, so you can expect the same type of sand and beautiful azure blue water. Perivolos beach offers a number of water sports including jet skiing, windsurfing, and scuba diving. You can even take a jet ski tour of the volcano from Perivolos. You’ll see the beach and island from a different perspective.

Santorini’s volcanic history makes it one of the most unique places to visit in the world and the beaches are no exception. If you’re on the island, you shouldn’t miss a chance to see and touch volcanic sand beaches.

Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. The multicolored cliffs, beaches, and volcanoes are a wonder to see. The beauty of this Greek island is unique and recognized around the world. Santorini is the perfect destination choice if you’re looking to have a romantic vacation. Here are three ways you can experience a romantic sunset while in Santorini:

Take a Walk for Sunset

The island is home to the well-known hiking trail of Fira – Oia. This hike will lead you through the villages of Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Oia. The trail takes you higher as you go, giving you an ever-changing view of the sea, caldera, and of course the sky, which makes sunset the perfect time for this romantic activity.

The sun dipping toward the water, the changing color of the sky, and the light against the white-washed houses of Oia is something you don’t want to miss. If you’re visiting Santorini during the hot months, early evening is also a good choice for a hike to avoid the heat. Once you arrive at Oia, you can enjoy food and drinks at a bar and take in the night sky. Oia has some of the best views of the caldera at sunset.

Eat a Romantic Dinner

What could be more romantic than enjoying a sunset dinner with the one you love? Whether you’re celebrating your anniversary, a birthday, or just your love for one another, a sunset dinner in Santorini is something you should add to your list. Imagine sitting at an outdoor table overlooking the Aegean Sea, sipping drinks, and enjoying local food while enjoying the view and the sunset.

Restaurants all over the island are set up specifically so that diners can enjoy the sunset as they eat. Many restaurants offer vegetarian and vegan options if you have a preference for either. And don’t forget to try a local wine. The wine made in Santorini has a unique flavor as volcanic ash, pieces of pumice, and solidified lava are mixed in the soil due to a volcanic eruption that submerged the island around 1620 BC. Consider eating your sunset meal in a place with a view in villages such as Fira or Oia.

Take a Romantic Sunset Cruise

Your vacation to Santorini wouldn’t be complete without the experience of a romantic sunset cruise. It makes for a dream-like date and one you’re not likely to forget. Whether you take a private or group cruise, you will sense the romance once you set sail and take in the view of the island and the sky from your place on the water.

If you’re thinking of proposing or simply want privacy with your significant other, a private cruise might be what you’re looking for. On a cruise you can expect food, drinks, and possibly a stop for a bit of swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. You will see sights such as the caldera, hot springs, and the towns from a different vantage point. You can set sail from Oia, Fira, and Thera to name just a few.

With a number of ways to view the sunset when on Santorini, you’re sure to find something that appeals to you. A trip to the island isn’t complete without at least one romantic sunset date.

There is a certain charm to the island of Santorini that you will feel as soon as you arrive. The island sits perched in the sea and it has a unique landscape thanks to its turbulent volcanic history. It also has an enchanting quality because this one of the theories is that this island was once the Lost Kingdom of Atlantis, particularly the portion of the island that pummeled to the bottom of the sea after the Volcano erupted.

While here, there is no shortage of things to do. Whether you want to go shopping, eat some of the delicious food, or enjoy a day in the sun at the beach, you won’t be disappointed by what this island has to offer. Besides the typical sites, there are also some pretty unique things to do here, as well.

Here’s a look at some of the most unique and interesting places you can see while visiting the Greek island of Santorini:

Volcano Hot Springs

Evidence of Santorini’s volcanic history can be found all over the island. Whether you’re gazing at its unique landscape, lounging at one of the black sand beaches, or simply admiring the view of the caldera, the volcano is something that has been a part of this island’s history. If you are looking for an even more unique way to experience the volcanic nature of the island, consider taking a trip to the hot springs! Through these special trips, you’ll have a chance to not only look at the springs, but to actually swim in them.

Naval Maritime Museum

If you are interested in naval history, you might want to visit the Naval Maritime Museum located in Oia, one of the popular villages of the island. The Museum was founded by a Greek naval captain, Antonis Diakoronias, in 1956. It changed locations in the 1990’s and has been in that location ever since.

Nea Kameni – Santorini Volcano

The Santorini Volcano hasn’t erupted in thousands of years, but it is considered to be dormant and not extinct. Visitors to the island can actually visit the volcano! It is located in the sea just off the coast of Santorini and you can easily book a tour that will take you to the volcano.

Museum of Prehistoric Thera

The history of the island of Santorini is long, and there have been people living here for thousands of years. The relics on display at this museum showcase a part of the island’s history that is long past. Glimpse ancient artifacts such as pottery, utensils and other items found on the island. You can also learn about some of the island’s ancient history here.

Cape Columbo

Are you looking for a place to experience the natural beauty of Santorini? If this is the case, make it a point to spend time at Cape Columbo. Besides being physically gorgeous, this cape is also a small beach. There are no facilities here but that shouldn’t stop you from spending a relaxing day in the sun here!

Kamari Open Air Cinema

If you are looking to watch a film while on Santorini, consider visiting the open air cinema at Kamari, which is located in Kamari village. No matter where you are on the island, you can either hire a cab or drive your rental care in order to get here. Be sure to check the film listings before you arrive!

Lost Atlantis Museum

The island of Santorini is filled with mystery, and much of this feeling has to do with the evidence of volcanic evidence that can be found here. One of the theories is that the island, or at least the portion that pummeled to the sea after a devastating volcanic eruption, is actually the Lost Kingdom of Atlantis. The Lost Atlantis Museum explores this possibility.

While visiting the island of Santorini, you won’t want to miss the chance to see these sites!

For stunning sun washed ocean views surrounding a community of art galleries, cafes, and tourist shops, Oia is a Greek village practically designed with restful, quiet tourism and photography opportunities in mind. The village is a popular stop for tourists who prefer extraordinary sunsets and unique shopping experiences. Stroll through the narrow streets to see different views of the ocean or the local volcano. Family oriented opportunities abound and the local flavor of the village will provide many delightful memories for everyone, young and old.

Watch The Sunset

For so many people life gets busy and even hectic. Take a break from all of that and make it a goal to simply soak up the inspiring beauty of a sunset over Oia. Many hotels, cafes, and other shops have exquisite cliffside views that let families look out over the ocean. When the sun sets, it becomes the main attraction as it burnishes boats in golden light and brings a natural phenomenon of light pouring down like a wave as it washes away the day. Come and be bewitched, or just come to fall in love again. This is one of the best places on the island to watch the sunset.

Visit The Volcano and Hot Springs

Here on Santorini families may discover the fascinating experience of both a volcano and local hot springs. The Palea Kameni and the Nea Kameni offer up-close and personal exploration. Children can walk over the cooled black lava near the volcano and see intriguing views of the villages that cling to the cliffsides nearby. Parents can enjoy a relaxing soak in the hot springs as they reduce stress and improve their overall health and wellbeing. You not only have a chance to relax, but to experience history!

Enjoy The Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum in Oia holds an impressive collection of nautical items including tools and detailed ship replicas. Descriptions of every item allow the visitor to imagine life aboard ship throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Housed within a beautiful mansion built in the 1950s, the museum also includes a library with a collection of maritime-oriented reading.

Take A Donkey Ride

Other places around the world may offer donkey rides for families. None can match this unique and fun ride around a Greek island. Traversing the picturesque streets by donkey adds that extra spark of adventure for everyone. The donkeys know the route already, so sit back and relax as you take in the views of Santorini from the back of an experienced guide who knows all the best places to stop.

There are plenty of things to do in Santorini that are family friendly. Besides the above activities, you can easily spend your days lounging at the beach, walking the streets and shopping, relaxing by your hotel pool, and eating great meals. Oia strives to offer a slower way of touring for those who need a breather after more stringent traveling. The people of Oia welcome you to their village and hope that you have a great vacation!

Santorini is a picturesque Greek island that looks just as beautiful in person as it does in the photographs. Not only that, but it is an island that seems to be cut from another time. Perhaps the island really did house the Lost City of Atlantis. Whether that’s true or not doesn’t seem to matter while you’re here, the island has a charm all its own. Nowhere is this idea more true than in its villages, and each village offers visitors a unique experience. Here’s an overview of some of the best villages to spend your time while on Santorini:

Oia

The village of Oia is perhaps one of the more well known places on the island, especially since many of the legendary sunset photos that were taken on the island were snapped while standing in the village overlooking the caldera. However, there is a lot more to the place than that. The village is perfect for meandering and has plenty of boutiques, restaurants, and cafes to pass the time. This is a place where artists flock with the promise of being able to paint a gorgeous interpretation of the scenery or where photographers set up their tripod in search of that perfect moment when the sunset casts a golden glow over the whitewashed buildings.

Pyrgos

One of the thing that sets Pyrgos apart from the rest of the villages on the island is its understated elegance. Perched on top of a hill, this charming place maintains its traditional feel. If you’re looking for a quiet place to enjoy a simple Greek way of life, this is where you should flock. Spend your days relaxing in a cafe or wandering the perfectly cobblestoned streets as you imagine what life was like in Greece 100 years ago. It’s easy to lose track of time here, as well, since the Greek mentality is one of relaxation and contentment.

Imerovigli

When people arrive on Santorini, they typically start their travels in Fira, the island’s largest city. Once they decide to venture out, many head to Oia, since they are lured by the promise of a great sunset. Somewhere in the middle of the two places lies Imerovigli – but just because many gloss over it, doesn’t mean that it should be ignored. In fact, it is one of the most beautiful villages on the island. All you have to do is stop and give it a chance. Spend some time wandering along the edge of the cliffs, where there are plenty of shops and cafes to hold anyone’s interest.

Finikia

If you decide to spend some time in Oia, you don’t want to miss the chance to visit Finikia. It’s an easy drive from the more popular village. In fact, Finikia is only a two-minute drive from Oia. It’s nestled inside a gorge and while many of the villages on Santorini were harmed by a major earthquake in the 1950’s, Finikia remained undamaged. It still has its original charm.

While on Santorini, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit these top villages!

Oia is one of those villages that seems to belong in another time. It’s also a place that seems to attract visitors from all over the world. They come here to experience a taste of this beautiful island, and even though the street is fairly short, there is plenty to do here. No matter where you are spending the majority of your time in Santorini, you should definitely make your way to Oia during your stay. Here’s a look at what you can do on the Main Street in Santorini:

Visit Amoudi Bay

Although this can be a bit of a climb on the way back up, you should take the time to visit Amoudi Bay while on the main street in Oia. Although there are some donkeys available that can take you up the steep pathway, the climb is something you can accomplish if you’re in decent enough shape. At the bottom of the trail, you’ll find plenty of tavernas serving fresh seafood, as well as a pretty area to lounge on the rocks and jump into the water. There are also some great views here.

Enjoy Sunset

One of the things that really makes this part of Santorini shine is the fact that some of the best sunsets in Greece can be experiences here. In the hours leading up to sunset, the main street that stretches through Oia has some wonderful vantage points to view the sunset. During certain times of year, you’ll begin to see eager visitors and locals congregating around certain areas because they know these are the best spots to view the legendary sunset. You may even see a few artists setting up their canvases so they can paint the sunset as it’s happening. This is definitely an experience you won’t want to miss!

Go Shopping

People who visit Oia report that this main stretch of road, while small, is filled with especially charming shops and boutiques to visit. This is where you can buy all your mementos of your trip to Greece. You can find all your standard souvenir shops as well as stores that offer things that are a little more unique, such as jewelry made from the volcanic rock that can be found on the island. There are also some art galleries on this strip, and you may even find some original art of the island to take home.

Eat a Great Meal

The island of Santorini is known for its delicious regional cuisine. In particular, the island has some great vineyards and is also known for having the ideal climate for growing tomatoes. You really can’t go wrong at any one of the charming restaurants, cafes, or tavernas that are part of the main street. No matter where you go, however, be sure to try some of the local wines and food specialties, such as the tomato croquettes, or domatokeftedes that are on nearly all of the menus.

While on the island of Santorini, you’ll definitely want to take the time to visit the main street in the village of Oia!

Visiting Santorini is a dream come true for most people. You can have a great vacation to Santorini on a budget. Before you book a flight or a cruise to Santorini, you will want to explore all your options. There are certain days of the week that are cheaper to fly than others. Take advantage of this to save money. If you don’t mind traveling to Santorini during off-peak seasons, this is another way to save a bit of money. Here’s how to save some money while on you trip:

Where to Stay

Your first choice might be to stay in a hotel with all the amenities, but you can stay in an equally nice place for less if you consider a hostel or an Air BNB. Remember that you won’t be inside most of the time, so as long as it’s clean and allows you to relax when you’re not out and about, it will work. Choose a place that is close to most of the things you want to see and you’ll cut down on your travel costs as well.

What to See

Now that you’re in Santorini, you’ll want to see the sights. If you’re the adventurous type, Santorini has plenty to offer that won’t cost you much, if anything at all. For example, you can hike from Fira to Oia. Relish in the amazing views that changes along the way, making for great photo opportunities. You can also go cliff diving at Amoudi Bay. If relaxation is more your style, you’ll enjoy the numerous beaches Santorini has to offer as well as landmarks such as churches, lighthouses, and the three bells of Fira. Pre-planning before you visit is the best way to know you’re going to do and ensure you stick to your budget. Getting around doesn’t have to be expensive either. You can take the public bus to get to most of the popular spots.

Eating On a Budget

You don’t want to eat in restaurants for all your meals if you’re trying to save money. While many aren’t incredibly expensive, you can eat Greek street food, which is not only delicious, but affordable too. It’s also perfect for when you’re on the go. You won’t be missing out on any of the flavours of Greek food by choosing this route as you’ll have access to souvlaki, gyros, spanakopita, tiropita, and so much more.

Souvenir Ideas

You’ll want to take home souvenirs to remember your vacation by, but you should focus on spending any budgeted money on authentic items instead of ones you can find in any corner of the world. If you really want to take home a t-shirt or mug, hit a discount store, which will offer them at a fraction of the price. Other ideas include restaurant napkins, matchbooks, brochures, and maps. Food and spice items are also a good idea for souvenirs. You’ll have a taste of Santorini when you get back home. Just be sure you know what you’re allowed to transport home.

Visiting Santorini and experiencing all is has to offer can be done on a budget. Pre-planning is the best way to make this happen.

Santorini SunsetSantorini is one of those islands that captivates you from the moment you arrive. It’s a striking island because the majority of it is built up on the rim of the ancient volcano. The rest of the island collapsed into the sea the last time the volcano erupted, and this only adds to the lore. Some believe that the collapsed portion of this island is the Lost City of Atlantis! Whether or not that is true it doesn’t matter, this island is stunningly beautiful and even the tourist crowds can’t diminish your enjoyment.

One of the top things to do while here is enjoy the sunset, but some spots are better than others. No matter how long you stay, you should try to choose at least one of these place. Here are some of the best places on Santorini to watch the sunset:

Oia

Of all the villages and cities on the island, Oia has some of the best views of the caldera at sunset. Leading up to the event, people will be gathering at certain spots. Those who want to paint the iconic scene set up their easels several hours before in the hopes that they will perfectly capture it once it’s happening. Photographers set up their tripods well in advance, also, so that a simple bump of the hand won’t impact the classic shots. Once you arrive in the village, ask the people for advice as to where the best place is. They will certainly point you in the right direction!

Fira-Oia Hiking Trail

Another great place to watch the sunset is from the Fira-Oia hiking trail. Although most people time this walk to get the to Oia in time for the big moment, there are some great views from the trail itself. However, the sunset views do get better the closer you get to Oia so it’s a good idea to choose your sunset spot wisely.

Skaros Rock

Another amazing spot to watch the sunset is at Skaros Rock in the village of Imerovigli. In fact, there are great views all over the old Venetian fortress! If you do take pictures, make sure you don’t miss snapping a few of the fortress ruins – they look absolutely stunning as the light changes.

Fira

Many people ignore Fira during the sunset and head towards Oia. However, they’re missing out on how beautiful Fira can be! The best place to watch the sunset in this larger city is at the large Orthodox Church that overlooks the caldera.

Sunset Cruise

If you want to do something different during sunset, consider taking a sunset cruise! As you spend time in the coastal areas, you’ll inevitably find people advertising these cruises. Ask around for the most reputable companies and be sure to book your spot on the cruise well in advance.

No matter where you decide to watch it, you’ll be treated to one of the most stunning sunsets in the world! Be sure to have your camera ready so that you can capture the moment. Whether you have only one night on the island or several doesn’t matter. Each time you’re able to gaze at the sunset will be just as memorable as the last!

]]>
Santorini is not only only the most visited island in Greece, but is one of the top destinations in the entire world. Millions of visitors flock to this island every year to catch a glimpse of the famous white buildings and blue domes overlooking the Aegean Sea. While the entire island is a photographer’s dream, here are the top five photography locations you can’t miss.

Catch the Sunset Over Oia

When you think of Santorini, whitewashed buildings and windmills are most likely the first things that come to mind. Oia is the second largest village on the island and is, without a doubt, the most iconic. You could spend all day here wandering the narrow streets and photographing the breathtaking architecture, but be sure to stay for sunset. There is a reason this is mentioned on pretty much every travel guide. Crowds begin to gather early so be sure to secure a good spot at least one hour before sunset.

Hike the Fira Trail

This trail between Fira and Oia has some of the best views on the entire island. At a leisurely pace, this hike takes about three hours. The views from this trail are beautiful any time of day, but around sunset, the colors of the sky are spectacular and the weather is cooler and the trails are less crowded. While in Fira, be sure to photograph the island’s volcano.

Visit Imerovigli Village

The name Imerovigli actually means “view spot” in Greek, and it is not hard to see why! There are so many viewpoints here it can be hard to settle on just one. This village is a blue dome paradise and offers a stunning view of the Caldera. The jewel of this village is the picturesque Imerovigli Anasasi Church which is the perfect place to capture those famous blue domes. Located only 2km from Fira, this village is easy to get to and is less crowded than Oia and Fira.

Lounge at Akrotiri Beach

Santorini actually has many different colored beaches which is part of what makes this island so unique. Akrotiri is the red sand beach and is arguably the most beautiful. The bright turquoise water against the red sand and cliffs is a stunning contrast and makes for unique beach photos. Other unique beaches include the black sand at Kamari and Perissa.

Visit Amoudi Bay

While the hike down to Amoudi Bay from Oia is worth it just for the views of the island, the main reason to visit is for the cliff jumping. If you have a waterproof camera, be sure to bring it along. The crystal clear mediterranean water makes for stunning photos and cliff jumping is an unforgettable must-do experience in Santorini.

These five locations should be at the top of your list on your trip to Santorini, but don’t forget to explore on your own as well. This island is full of hidden gems tucked away behind the tourist- filled spots in the guidebooks. Santorini is a photography paradise and will leave you dreaming of the magical sunsets and stunning architecture for years to come.

Santorini is one of the most popular Greek islands to visit. People come here to enjoy its gorgeous setting, and the scenery, particularly the sunsets, are legendary. This is a great island for enjoying the beach, relaxing, and even shopping. However, it is also the perfect destination for enjoying some outdoor sports. Here’s more information:

Scuba Diving

Located in the Aegean Sea, it is only natural that Santorini would be a prime diving destination. The island’s best dive sites are located next to a 400-meter drop-off, providing exceptional aquatic viewing opportunities. The Perissa and Kamari Rock dive sites are famous for their crystal clear water and black sand.

The volcanic rock formations come together to form a stunning underwater labyrinth. For a more remote dive experience, choose to travel to White Island. Located on the western edge of the caldera, this small island boasts the opportunity to get up close and personal with octopus, barracudas, and eels.

Water Sports

The azure warm waters of Santorini practically beg to be enjoyed with a host of recreational activities. Although the island boasts miles of coastline, the majority of the water sport opportunities are found at the Kamari and Perissa beach resorts. At these places, you can choose to get wet by enjoying an adrenaline-filled jet ski or wakeboarding adventure, stand-up paddle boards, or peaceful windsurfing or parasailing. You can also choose to take the whole group out on a banana boat ride, kayaks, waterski boats, and much more. There will be no shortage of fun when you choose to get out on the water and enjoy some of Santorini’s best ocean activities.

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is an ideal way to get out and explore this diverse island. Ride past rolling vineyards, along majestic coastlines, and through quaint villages. There is a variety of riding outfitters to choose from, making it easy to find the best tour for your needs. You can choose to go it alone or tag along on a guided tour. You can even choose to ride a mule! Riding a horse gives you a great vantage point as you take in all of the natural beauty of idyllic Santorini.

Hiking

Hiking aficionados will appreciate the vast network of trails scattered throughout Santorini. Be sure to bring along your hiking boots because you are surely going to want to be able to hit the trail. The most popular hike on the island begins at the port town of Fira and winds along the rim of the caldera for approximately ten kilometers before ending in the town of Oia. Hikers delight in the sweeping views of the Aegean Sea and the towering cliffs of this gem. This hike will also take you past a myriad of historical sights such as the Firostefani and the Church of Saint Gerasimos.

Santorini is a beautiful Greek island that has had a violent geological past. The island itself is actually a dormant volcano that rarely erupts. However, the last documented eruption took place in the 1950’s. Despite this, visitors flock to the island because they are enchanted by the scenery, and evidence of the island’s volcanic history is present all over. One of the most popular reminders of this volcanic activity can be found at Red Beach, which owes its unique red sand to Santorini’s volcanic history. Here’s some information about this beach:

How to Get to Red Beach

This beach is located near the village of Akrotiri and you have two basic options for reaching it. There is a road that reaches the beach, which means that you can take a taxi, drive a car, or take a bus to the main parking lot. Once you arrive at the parking lot, you’ll need to trek down to the beach itself on foot. There is also a boat that goes from Akrotiri to the beach itself. If the thought of hiking down the steep path doesn’t interest you, the boat is an excellent alternative. However, be sure to check he ferry schedules.

Enjoy the Stunning Scenery

Red Beach is particularly known for its scenery. However, because of the unique geography of the island, the parking lot is set on top of some cliffs, and the beach itself is located below the cliffs. However, before you even make the descent on the short walking path down onto the beach, there are some stunning views from the parking lot itself.

Be sure to snap a few pictures before you descent the path to get to the beach.  Once you arrive at the beach, you’ll have an entirely different view. Instead of gazing down at the beach from on top of the cliffs, the cliffs will be above you. The combination of the cliffs, the red sand, and the Aegean sea make this beach truly stunning!

Ideal Beach for Outdoor Activities

Once you’re on the beach, you’ll notice that it is the ideal spot for various physical activities. The water here is very warm, which means that it is an excellent beach for swimming. Besides that, it is also a popular spot for divers and snorkelers. If doing these activities is something that interests you, you might want to consider hiring a guide who can take you to all the most interesting places

Red Beach is conveniently located near the popular village of Akrotiri. It has a reputation of being one of the most beautiful beaches not only on the island of Santorini, but also in all of Greece. As a result, it has a tendency to get a little crowded. In order to increase your enjoyment of this beach, it is a good idea to travel during the warmer off peak months, such as May, September, and October. However, if you do find yourself here during peak season, you won’t be disappointed. It’s a great beach to visit year round!
