Cafe Avissinia

Featuring home-cooked classics and an impressive menu of mezedakia, Cafe Avissinia should top your list of restaurants to eat at during your stay in Athens. It’s a bit tucked away, as well, but the food is so good that it always seems to have a healthy crowd. Try to plan your visit so that you eat here when there’s live music!

Kanella

If you want to visit a traditional Greek taverna, Kanella is the place to be! However, despite the fact that it is a traditional taverna in spirit, the decor and even some of the items on the menu have a modern flair. Be sure to try one of the fresh salads and lamb dishes during your visit – these are some of the dishes that the restaurant is most known for. It’s located at Leoforos Konstantinoupoleos 70 in the Gazi area of Athens.

Funky Gourmet

Are you looking for a place to eat that features “new” cuisine that is a little more spontaneous? Funky Gourmet located at Paramithias 3  Salaminas in Keramikos is one of those places where you’ll be able to experience some new twists on traditional Greek foods. The chef at this restaurant also has two Michelin stars, so the cuisine does appeal to an international audience.

Spondi

Spondi is another restaurant that has two Michelin stars, but the cuisine tends to be a little bit more traditional. Continually voted as one of Athens’ best restaurants by locals and tourists alike, Spondi appeals to a wide audience. Although the dishes are traditionally Mediterranean, it takes these classic home favorites and gives them an elegant twist by adding French haute cuisine elements. It is located at Pyrronos 5 in the Pangrati section of Athens.

Paradosiako

If you’re looking for a traditional taverna that is easily accessed from many of Athens’ main tourist sites, Paradosiako is your ideal spot! Located right in the Plaka, this restaurant features delicious, traditional cuisine in an easy and relaxed setting. If possible, try to eat outside to view some of the best slice-of-life moments that Greece has to offer! It is located at Voulis 44a in the Plaka.

In fact, if you only have time for one museum, this is where you should go because it will give you a nice overview of several periods in Greek history.

Byzantine Museum

While in Greece, it’s important not to forget the role that the Orthodox Christian Church has played in its history. Athens is a city that has many layers. On the one hand, it is a place with a rich history. On the other, it is also a modern and cosmopolitan city. Observing the stunning architecture throughout the city can give you a taste of the many layers of the city! You should definitely make a point to visit these five architectural masterpieces while visiting Athens, Greece.

Here’s a look at some of the top architectural sites to visit while in Athens, Greece:

National Museum of Contemporary Art

Considered to be one of the city’s more modern buildings, the National Museum of Contemporary Art has been open since 2000 and houses some of the finest Greek and international modern artworks. The mostly white building with red accents gives off a clean and refined look that’s intended to make each visitor who tours the museum feel at ease.

Inside the museum, visitors are given the opportunity to see paintings, sculptures and other intricate art pieces that were created by celebrated contemporary artists such as Stephen Antonakos, Ilya Kabakov and Gary Hill. Several escalators are located throughout the building to take guests to the upper floors.

 Acropolis Museum

Situated atop ancient ruins that date back to the Roman and Byzantine empires, the Acropolis Museum focuses on artifacts found at the Acropolis of Athens. The museum’s design theme was inspired by the concepts of light, movement and natural changes of the earth. Another interesting architectural feature of the building is the rectangular hall that was made with a sloping floor to simulate the climb to the rock on which the Acropolis of Athens is located on a smaller scale.

This is not only a building with great architecture, but there are some fascinating artworks and artifacts to see here. These give visitors further insight into the significance of the Acropolis of Athens along with more details about the city’s ancient history. A glass floor allows guests the chance to see excavations of the historic ruins that lie beneath the museum.

Herodes Atticus Odeon

This ancient Roman theater was carved from stone and finished around 161 AD. Herodes Atticus, a notable Roman-Greco politician, commissioned the construction of the theater to honor his late wife Aspasia Annia Regilla. The tiered seating, center stage and ancient backdrop still stand in their glory. After surviving through many centuries along with the turmoil of World War II, the theater underwent extensive renovations in 1950 to preserve it for more generations to come. In modern times, the theater has been used regularly to host music concerts along with the Athens Festival. The theater can be accessed from the slope of the Acropolis of Athens.

Panathenaic Stadium

Along with being the only stadium in the world to be constructed entirely of marble, the Panathenaic Stadium is famous for being a venue of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and then again in 2004. Originally built in ancient times, the stadium was abandoned at the end of the 4th century and remained in a state of ruins until it was revitalized in the 19th century. With a capacity of 45,000, the stadium still draws large crowds who gather to watch the finish of the Athens Marathon each November. A long oval-shaped track in the center of the stadium is sometimes used for other athletics competitions, and the venue also hosts music concerts on occasion.

Erechtheion

Built to honor the Greek god and goddess Poseidon and Athena, this temple was built in 406 BC and is another fascinating building on the Acropolis of Athens. Despite its missing roof, columns and statues help visitors realize what the temple may have looked like when it was complete. The Porch of the Caryatids is a notable feature of the temple and is flanked with six maiden statues and a series of columns. The location of the temple is also one of the best places to see stunning panoramic views of Athens and the surrounding mountains.

These landmarks are just a few examples of the stunning architecture that people can see while visiting Athens. Along with their beauty and significance, these landmarks can teach visitors more about the history and culture of Greece.

Athens is one of those cities where the past and present intersect. You can easily visit historical sites while also hitting all the latest shops and clubs. The neighborhood of Monastiraki in Athens is one of those areas in the city where this is especially true, and it is filled with some iconic landmarks. There is enough to do here to spend at least a day seeing the sights around the area.

Learn about the attractions that Monastiraki has to offer below:

Roman Agora

The Roman Agora offers the visual remains of an ancient marketplace. View the structures and picture when people used to come to get food. Admission is free for students and children. Being accompanied by a guide when you tour is highly recommended as there is not much written about the site on the grounds. A plus to this attraction as it is very close to the Monastiraki metro station, making visiting easy.

Agia Irini Chuch

This church has stunning architectural features, and is close to the main Monastiraki square. Step inside and experience the spiritual, peaceful environment. The church is Orthodox, and services can be attended. No matter when you visit, make sure you dress modestly because shorts and miniskirts are not allowed. In 1972, the Ministry of Culture declared Agia Irini Church as a monument of interest. This church is not-to-be-missed on your tour of Monastiraki.

Hadrian Library

If you are the type of person who could spend all day at a library, make sure you check out the Hadrian Library. The space was damaged in 267 A.D., so only the remains are visible, but you can appreciate what has stood the test of time and picture yourself reading an ancient text. If you have the time to visit, take a quick tour of the structure. Get the multi-spot ticket.

Flea Market

Located at Avissynias Square, the market at Monastiraki is one of the most famous in all of Greece.  Get there early on a Sunday, when the most wares are sold, well before 11 a.m. You might have to dig through the piles of cheap goods, from clothing to trinkets, to find gems. Vintage wears and pearls can be found if you look hard enough. If possible, try to compare what is for sale and try to haggle to get the best deals. You could spend some time wandering the stalls or browsing.

Go during the daylight hours to get the widest selection. Many restaurants, including Oraia Penteli, are nearby. Dine on moussaka, spinach pie and fried cheese, while you receive attentive service. Listen to live music and relax after your shopping spree. Enjoy a drink in the garden for picturesque views. If you opt to eat in Monastiraki, check out the area near the Agora for cheap souvlaki and gyros.

Take time to explore the lively neighborhood of Monastiraki on your trip to Athens. You will be sure to have a memorable, unique and unforgettable experience.

View on Acropolis at night, Athens, GreeceAthens is a city that appears to have two existences. It’s hard to go anywhere in the city without being greeted with remnants of its ancient past, such as the ancient Parthenon and the various archeological findings that are scattered throughout the city.

Besides that, however, it is also clear that Athens is a modern city. This means that when people visit, they have a choice – they can either enjoy all that the modern city of Athens has to offer, or they can learn about its past. Most people, however, don’t choose – they do both.

Here’s an overview of what you should do when visiting this city:

Ancient Acropolis

If you only have a short time in Athens, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit its ancient Acropolis. Home of the Parthenon and the ancient Agora, the acropolis itself is actually quite massive. In order to really do your visit justice, you should give yourself plenty of time to take it all in. In fact, it is a good idea to hire a tour guide to show you around and explain to you everything that you see in front of you. Being in the presence of such ancient history is sure to be the highlight of your trip.

National Archaeological Museum

It isn’t enough to simply see the ancient monuments in person – it is important to actually learn about what you’re seeing. While it is possible to learn a lot from your tour guide at the Acropolis, this doesn’t necessary give you the whole picture. Many of the artifacts that were found at the Acropolis and other places throughout Athens and the rest of the Greece are being stored at the National Archaeological Museum. In order to get the whole picture, you should visit the museum in addition to the acropolis itself.

Plaka District

The Plaka is a neighborhood that sits below the Acropolis. This means that when you visit the Acropolis, you should leave yourself plenty of time to explore the Plaka when you’re done!. There are plenty of  shops, tavernas, and restaurants here to pass the time. If you love this district, it is also a great area to base your stay in Athens since there are some hotels here, as well.

Syntagma Square

Syntagma Square, also referred to as Constitution Square, is a site you won’t want to miss. At the square, you’ll be able to glimpse the Greek Parliament building, which is also the Old Royal Palace, as well as witness the changing of the guards. If you do decide to visit the square, however, you should make sure that there are no protests going on. When people decide to protest the government for any reason, this tends to be where people congregate. Ask at your hotel for more information.

As you can see, many of the things that you can do in Athens involves taking it its history. However, there is so much more to the city than that. Leave yourself plenty of time to walk through the various neighborhoods, take in the nightlife, and even do some shopping! It’s easy to see why people love visiting here.

Athens is by far the biggest city in Greece, but don’t let its size fool you! It is incredibly charming because it is both an ancient city and a modern one. It is also close to a pristine coastal area with some wonderful beaches and some excellent nightclubs. It is also a romantic city, and couples find that they adore spending time here. Here are some activities that couples love doing while they are in Athens:

Watch the Sunset on Lycabettus Hill

At over 900 ft. above sea level, Lycabettus Hill is the highest point in Athens. Most people take the funicular railway which leaves from the Kolonaki neighborhood. At the top is the church of St. George (Agios Georgios) which is open to visitors and offers cooling shade during the day. A viewing platform in front of the church gives spectacular views of the city. A café offers breakfast, lunch, and snacks. An amphitheater hosts concerts by Greek and foreign performers in summertime. The restaurant is perfect for a romantic dinner with a view of the entire city.

Meander Through the National Gardens

The National Gardens are a verdant oasis of 38 acres amid central Athens. The gardens were created in 1838 by the first queen of Greece and initially only for royalty until the 1920s when they were opened to the public. The gardens are home to 519 species of plants including 7,000 trees and 40,000 bushes and other plants. The majority of species are native to Greece but there are varieties from places such as Australia and China and the Pacific Islands. Six lakes dot the gardens, where you can feed the ducks that call the gardens home. The gardens also have a conservatory, a children’s library, and a café.

Visit the Athens Riviera

The Athens Riviera is a picturesque stretch of coastline filled with beaches, coves, and resorts. Swim in the sea, stroll along pedestrian shopping streets, or enjoy your favorite watersports only a 30-minute drive from central Athens. Five-star resorts offer spas, water sports, and golf. Gourmet restaurants and traditional tavernas serve fresh seafood. Beach bars and nightclubs offer music, dancing, and nightlife activities. Marinas offer sailing enthusiasts many opportunities for boating to nearby islands and beaches. One of the most popular destinations is the temple of Poseidon where legend says King Aegeus, thinking he had lost his only son Theseus to the Minotaur in the labyrinth, jumped to his death.

Watch a Film at the Open-Air Cinema

Athens neighborhoods have many open-air cinemas all around the city for a romantic summer movie night. Visit a cinema with a view of the Acropolis or in fragrant gardens or next to the sea for a unique Athens experience. A few things to know before you go: theaters usually offer two showings, one at 9:00 p.m. and one at 11:00 p.m.; purchase tickets ahead of time to avoid lines; there are no reserved seats; theaters usually have snacks and drinks available for purchase; most movies have intermissions.

Whether you’re a cinema buff, a horticulturist, a lover of scenery, or just a romantic at heart, Athens has something to make your visit special.

The grounds of Aristotle’s Lyceum make for a peaceful walk, especially with the aromas of the oregano, lavender, rosemary, and thyme that grow in the area. There are benches placed around the site where you can relax and take in the historic surroundings. While touring the Lyceum, you will be able to explore the library, baths, and more.

When visiting Athens, Greece you can explore on your own and pick the landmarks you want to see or you can do a group tour, which may include some or all of these sites as various stops. Taking a guided tour will not only allow you to see more places than you might be able to on your own, but you’ll also get information from knowledgeable guides.

AthensAthens is one of those cities where there is so much to do, it can be hard to determine how to spend your time. This is one of those rare cities where the past and present successfully merge to create something completely wonderful. An ideal trip itinerary would include a mix of activities that celebrate all sides of the city. Here are some ideas for the best things to do while here:

Tour the Ancient Acropolis

If you only have time to see one site from ancient times, the Ancient Acropolis, which is the home of the Parthenon, is it! The Parthenon is an ancient temple that was constructed to honor Athena, the goddess of wisdom and the patroness of the city of Athens. If you have the chance, take a tour of the Ancient Acropolis and also visit the Acropolis Museum, which houses most of the archaeological findings from the Acropolis. In case you have time to spend the whole day here, consider taking a guided tour of the whole Acropolis!

Visit the Anafiotika Neighborhood

Of all the older neighborhoods in Greece, the Anafiotika is definitely worth a visit, which originates in the 1800’s. Here, you will be able to witness some of the homes that were built during the reign of King Otto, the king who came into power after the Greek people won their independence from the Ottoman Empire. The notable thing about these homes is that they were built by legendary masons who came from Anafi, Greece. They’re also a fine example of homes in Greece from that time period.

Go to the Benaki Museum

Although people may automatically think to only explore the world of Ancient Greece, it’s nice to get reminders that there are other things in the world to explore. The Benaki Museum, which has several campuses throughout Athens, has everything from Chinese porcelains to Islamic art and offers a nice way to spend the day. If you’re a fan of modern art, check out the newest annex, which is located in the Rouf area of the city.

Experience the Nightlife

Even though the city is lively throughout the day, there’s something special about the night. Athenian nightlife is hopping, especially in the warmer months! This is when native Athenians, who are finished with their work day, gather their loved ones and hit the town. Travelers do the same thing, and they often meet in the same restaurants, tavernas, and bars. Whether you want to experience something traditional or a bit more modern, Athens is one of those cities that has a nighttime experience that will seem tailor-made just for you!

Climb to See the View

Do you want to view the city from above? Mount Lycabettus sits just over 700 feet above the city. You can easily trek up this mountain yourself using a path that begins at Aristippou Street or you can pay the fee to take the transportion, which leaves from both Kolonaki and Aristippou Streets. For an extra treat, do this hike just before sunset so that you can watch the city burst with color as the sun dips below the horizon.

If you only have a short amount of time in Athens, consider doing at least one of these top activities!

Athens is the biggest city in Greece. This means that as a guest, it can be hard to find the best places to go! While visiting, it’s only natural that you’ll want to do some shopping to bring home a few souvenirs. Sure, you can walk into any tourist shop and buy a few kitschy items to throw in your suitcase. However, it’s a lot more fun to use shopping as a way to experience another part of the Greek culture! You simply can’t do this in the traditional tourist shops. Here are some of the best places to shop in Athens. Many of these have more than just “tourist” items. These are where the locals often go to do their shopping!

Ermou Street

If you love fashion, it’s fun to visit the clothing shops in other countries. Some of the styles are likely different than what you’re used to, and you can find some real gems to take home with you! Ermou street is known for having a lot of shops with fashionable clothing at great prices. There are also other stores, such as tourist shops, to explore here as well. However, the main draw here is to go into some of the mainstream shops. Some of them, such as Hondos Center, have several locations throughout Greece.

Athinas Street

For those who love casual clothing, Athinas Street is the place to be! Shop owners regularly carry simple items, such as t-shirts and jeans, at great prices. It’s also close to Ermou Street, so you can spend the day browsing in some of the fashionable shops on Ermou, and then the casual ones on Athinas Street, while still having plenty of time left to enjoy some of the famous Athenian restaurants and bars!

There’s also a lot of food markets on this street, which means that you can always bring home some authentic Greek food products to enjoy (as long as they clear customs!) You can find much better deals on food products here than you would in some of the more touristy places. Those shops tend to mark up their prices.

Aeolou and Agios Markos Streets

Even though you can find good deals in some of the other shopping districts, most of the best bargains are located on Aeolou and Agios Markos Streets. This is where Athenians do their real bargain hunting! In fact, this is where the city’s hobbyists end up. There are plenty of shops selling anything from art supplies to yarn, and they can be found at great prices.

If you want to pick up a unique item for your favorite hobby or craft, this is the place to do it. There are also plenty of home stores here, which means that you can always bring home some authentic Greek kitchen supplies, some of which are different than what you’re used to at home.

While in Athens, it’s worth it to go off the beaten path a little bit to shop away from the tourist traps!

Athens is the biggest city in Greece and while visiting here, it can feel a little overwhelming. It’s true that most people focus all their energy on shopping, eating great food, and visiting the historical landmarks and museums.

However, few people realize that there are communities on the outskirts of the city that are actually right on the water and you don’t need to travel far from the city center to get there, either. Many of these places are within the public transportation network and you can certainly take a taxi or your rental car to any of these spots.

Here’s more information about the best beaches to visit while in Athens:

Vouliagmeni Beach

At just twenty three kilometers away, Vouliagmeni is one of the closest beaches to the city center. This is a great beach to visit since it is well organized and has plenty of facilities for people to enjoy. It’s also a bustling area and there are plenty of things to do once you are done lounging in the sun. There are also tennis and volleyball courts at the beach as well as water slides and other things that kids might enjoy. This beach is also excellent for families and there are sun beds and umbrellas to rent, which will make your outing much easier.

Votsalakia Beach

Located near the Pireaus and Mikorlimano, Votasalakia Beach is one that you won’t want to miss. It is also only ten kilometers away from the Athens city center. Since it is so convenient to Athens, this beach can get crowded during peak tourist months and it is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. The beach is clean and the water is warm. However, you’ll want to bring a sturdy pair of beach shoes because the beach is made of pebbles, not sand.

Loutsa Beach

If you want a beach that is known for its nightlife, you will want to head to a beach like Loutsa. Although it is only thirty kilometers from the center of the city, locals and tourists both flock here to enjoy the clubs, restaurants, and cafes. This beach, however, isn’t necessarily good for families since it gets so crowded. Pass this beach over if you’re looking for a place for the kids to play and splash around in the water. You will want to head here if the nightlife is your main motivation.

Porto Raffi Beach

Porto Raffi can provide you with the ultimate escape from the city. The beach is located in a picturesque and lovely beach community that can stand on its own as a resort. If you would rather stay away from the center of the city, you can easily make Porto Raffi your home base while visiting this part of Greece and journey to the city to see some of the historical sites and museums. Porto Raffi gives you the best of both worlds. The beach itself is usually busy with other resort goers, and it also draws a healthy crowd of locals.

While visiting the city of Athens, you won’t want to miss the chance to visit one of these beaches. No matter what you are in the mood for, there really is a beach for everyone. The main city center isn’t by the coast, but the sea isn’t far away.

Sure, there are a lot of great things you can do while in Greece. The weather is idyllic and filled with plenty of sunshine, and a big part of your trip will no doubt be spent at the beach or enjoying the outdoors in some capacity. There are also some amazing landmarks and museums to visit, as well as plenty of shopping opportunities.

Here are some highlights of different Greek foods you need to try while visiting Greece:

Greek Cheese

No visit to Greek would be complete without a sample of the country’s cheeses. It is such an important part of the cuisine and is not only present in some of the country’s most iconic dishes, such as the Greek village salad (horiatiki), but it is also eaten on its own. Here are some of the top cheeses you’ll want to sample:

  • Feta – Greece’s most famous cheese. Traditionally made of sheep’s milk, this cheese is perfect mixed in with a fresh Greek salad or slice of bread.
  • Kefalotyri – One of Greece’s most contemporary cheeses, Kefalotyri is made from either sheep’s milk alone or a mixture of sheep and goat’s milk with a salty flavor.
  • Metsovone – A go-to table cheese in Greece, this cheese consists of cow’s milk or a combination of cow and either sheep or goat’s milk. It’s enjoyed in both traditional Greek recipes or eaten alone.

Greek Wine

Greek wine has been around for thousands of years and was one of the first places on earth that wine has been produced. However, aside from always having a local culture, Greek wines have recently been making it to the world stage. Here are some of the top Greek wines to try while visiting:

  • Assyrtiko –  One of the top wines in the country, this white grape wine from Santori is fruitfully flavored with a salty finish.
  • Agiorgitiko – Hailing from the region of Peloponnese, this red wine is rich with flavors of raspberry, black currant and plum.
  • Vinsanto –  Made of white grapes but smelling like red grape wine, this pick is a journey for the senses, with a strong scent and powerful taste.

Traditional Dishes

Greek cuisine is filled with iconic dishes and while in Greece, there will be an abundance of things to try. Overall, the following list gives the highlights:

  • Olives and olive oil – Olives are a foundational part of the country’s food culture. Mixed in with Greece’s olive oil, these can be enjoyed as an appetizer, snack or part of a great meal.
  • Moussaka – Found throughout the Mediterranean and Balkans region, Moussaka gets its Greek touch by featuring ingredients such as minced lamb, eggplant, onion, garlic and various spices.
  • Baklava –  Desert wouldn’t be complete in Greece without baklava, especially with honey flavor. This light and fluffy pastry is a perfect way to wrap up any Greek meal.

Greek Spirits

While the country may be known more for its food and wine beverages, Greece has plenty to offer when it comes to spirits, including the following:

  • Ouzo – There is no more traditional Greek spirit than Ouzo. Consisting of distilled anise, this spirit is the top choice for a social drink.
  • Raki – Known as tsikoudia elsewhere in Greece, raki is something you will be drinking plenty of if you visit the island of Crete!
  • Brandy – Greeks have their own brandy, and it is delicious and worth trying. It is often found under the “Metaxa” label.

Greece is filled with many wonderful food and drink opportunities, with the above mentioned being the absolute top picks!

Athens is one of the most unique cities in the world, and it is the largest city in Greece. It is one of those fascinating places that is both modern and ancient, with activities that give a nod to the past, such as touring the Parthenon, or something that is rooted in the present, such as going shopping.

When you first arrive at the city, it can be completely overwhelming. There is so much to see and do here that the general fear is that you’ll miss something. Taking a city tour can solve that problem. Here’s more information about this:

Get to Know Athens, Greece

You can certainly get to know the city without a guided tour, especially if you have great resources at your disposal. However, there is something about getting shown all of the famous sites by a knowledgeable guide that really helps enhance your experience. There are tours available concerning different topics. For example, if you only want to focus on the ancient history of the city, you can easily focus on that. Or, you can take a more generalized tour that will help you get a nice overview of the city.

Learning About Athens Through Tours

Here’s a look at some of the different kinds of tours you can take during your time in Athens, Greece:

Hope-On-Hop-Off Tour

There are several different types of tours that you can take while in Athens. First, there are some nice overview tours that you can join, such as the Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus Tour. The Hop-On-Hop-Off tours are especially valuable because you have a chance to sit on the bus and listen to the narration, while getting off at certain stops so that you can explore the city further. It can take you several days to make it through the tour, especially if you spend a good amount of time at each stop. This could be a great way to spend your time!

City Bus Tours

There are also plenty of options for group bus tours that will take you around the city. Unlike the Hop-On-Hop-Off tour, you are tied to the itinerary that was set by the tour operators. Even though you lose a bit of the freedom that you would have had if you chose to see these sites by yourself, or if you did the Hop-On-Hop-Off tour, these tours tend to be informative and efficient, enabling you to see a lot of the city for a short amount of time. When you first arrive in a city, this can be a great option for you.

Niche Tour

Do you have a specific interest that you want to explore regarded the history and culture of Athens? If so, you might want to book a tour that focuses on this interest. For example, if you are especially intrigued by the food of the city, you can easily find a food tour that will help you hit all the great spots. You can also take tours that focus on specific parts of the history of the city, such as a guided tour of the Acropolis, or even a niche tour of the museums and other landmarks.

While in Athens, you might want to consider taking a tour of the city to get an overview.

Athens is the capital of Greece and is undoubtedly one of the greatest hubs for Greek street-food in the county. Two things often come to mind when Greek food is mentioned; souvlaki and strong black coffee. However, on the bustling streets of Athens, there is so much more to choose from. From savory to sweet, healthy to heavy, there’s something for everyone! Here’s more information:

Souvlaki

While souvlaki may be over-abundant, there are two souvlaki joints well worth mentioning. These two places are easy to remember because they both have the same name, Kostas. If you love spicy food, the Kostas on Agias Irinis Square covers their souvlaki in a delicious red sauce. This secret recipe has brought back loyal spicy souvlaki fans since 1984. The other Kostas, located on Pentelis 5, has been in business for ten years. The souvlaki here is quite literally world-famous. Kostas only serves food until the fresh ingredients from the morning run out, so you better get there early! You can even try out the worthy vegan souvlaki at Amanita Grill.

Pita

Another great treat street food on the streets of Athens is the tiropita, or “cheese pie.” The best cheese pie in Athens can be found at the Ariston bakery, which has been in operation since 1910. Ariston serves old-fashioned tiropita and other traditional Greek pies. You can also easily find tiropita and other types of pita in bakeries and cafes all over the city. It is possible to walk into these places and get your pita to go so you can eat a quick bite on the streets. This is a particularly common thing to do for a quick breakfast or late morning snack.

Desserts

What’s life without a little dessert? Athens has some of the most delicious sweets in the world. One dessert, thessaloniki, can even cure your hangover according to local legend! At only just a dollar per piece, this custard-filled pastry made from filo dough is a staple for late-night drinkers. The best part about this treat is that it’s topped with cinnamon!

Popular among children, loukoumadhes are similar to American donuts, only they’re better. Fried dough dressed in cinnamon and honey will leave you wanting more. If you want old-world loukoumadhes, you simply must try the ones at Krinos. They have been serving up sweets since 1923.

Other Snacks

Named after the man who invented the sandwich, Montagu’s serves scrumptious Athenian sandwiches paired with delicious coffee and tasty juices. If it’s bagels you are craving, Amandine fills theirs with all kinds of divine fillings. To try out more than 100 hangover-curing hot dogs, be sure to wander down to Johnie Hot Dog.

If you want to sit and enjoy a fine spirit with your fresh seafood, Zisis puts a modern twist on the classic ouzerie. If you want seafood on the go, try the Fish Cafe. This chippy serves their dishes in a signature paper cone. This kind of chippy isn’t often found in Britain anymore, so you are in for a treat. It is a great place to grab a bite before checking out the Acropolis Museum.

Whether you come to Athens for the sweet, the savory, or everything in between, one thing is certain, Athenians will always be lovers of great food. No matter the economic conditions, the gastronomic culture will stay alive and well in this beautiful country. Kalí órexi! Enjoy your meal!

The beads at the market in AthensAlthough the shopping area in Monastiraki Athens, Greece is referred to as a “flea market”, that doesn’t give a full picture of what it actually is. On Sundays, many of the storefronts are closed and people do set up tables selling their used wares. However, for the rest of the week, it is more like a traditional bazaar than a flea market. Here, you can find just about anything, and it is the perfect place for those who visit Greece to find some great deals. In fact, this is one of the best places in the city to buy jewelry, as long as you know what you’re doing. Here are some tips that will help come in handy if you try to buy jewelry at the Monastiraki market in Athens.

Don’t Buy Precious Gems

You have your eye on a beautiful sapphire and white gold ring and you’re pretty sure that the shopkeeper is about to give you a great deal. No matter how great the deal seems, you may want to rethink your decision to buy the ring. When it comes to buying fine jewelry, it is all too easy for those precious gems to be fakes. Most people can’t spot them with their eyes and some imposters are so close to the real thing, it would take careful scrutiny by a gemologist to really determine if it is the real thing. That’s not to say that you are getting ripped off. You could very well be getting a great deal on the real thing – but why take that chance if you don’t know for sure? Save your money and buy fine jewelry that you can verify as being the real thing.

Know the Price of Gold

Before you start looking at the jewelry, you should look up what the actual price of gold is and understand how that translates to the jewelry that you’ll be buying. Granted, when you buy a piece of gold jewelry, other things factor into the price, such as the cost of the designer and the markup by the store. However, knowing the price of gold will help you determine where the prices stand and if they are reasonable. If they aren’t, you’ll know that you need to negotiate a better price elsewhere.

Always Use Your Credit Card

When it comes to buying jewelry in Greece in general (and of course in Monastiraki!), especially jewelry that is marketed as being the real thing, you should steer clear of any store that only accepts cash. This could be a sign that the shop owners know that the jewelry they are selling isn’t actually the real thing. If you don’t use a credit card, they know that there will be no repercussions. On the other hand, you should always use your credit card, even if they charge an extra fee. That way, if you get home and realize that the shop sold you a fake, you can dispute the charge and not be liable. You simply explain to the credit card company that they told you the jewelry was real and it actually wasn’t.

You can find some great deals for jewelry when shopping at Monastiraki in Athens – as long as you take this advice!

The Greek capital of Athens is a hub of activity. Athens was the heart of ancient Greece and is still dominated by 5th-century BC landmarks. The city is popular with both residents and tourists. Getting around Athens in an efficient way is possible thanks to the modern transportation that has been developed.

Here’s what you need to know about getting around Athens while visiting the city:

Getting to Athens

You can fly into Athens from anywhere in the world, arriving at Athens International Airport. The airport receives both domestic and international flights. From the airport, you can take taxi, bus, or train to get to the heart of Athens.

Taking a Taxi

Taxis in Athens are all yellow, so they are easy to spot when you need one. When you’re coming from the airport, port, rail station, and KTEL bus station via taxi, there is an extra fee. And taxi rides between midnight and 5 am. are double regular hour rates. Taxis can be found everywhere, so no matter where you’re visiting throughout Athens, this is a form of transportation you can always rely on.

Buses and Trolley Buses

In Athens you will find blue buses and yellow trolley buses. The network of buses usually runs from 6 am to until 11 pm. There are some buses that do run 24 hours, including Express buses that run from the airport. Tickets to ride these buses can be purchased at the many kiosks found around Athens.

KTEL buses are suburban buses that connect suburban neighborhoods and towns around Greece. These buses are a popular for getting around in Athens even though they are more expensive than the train. One of the two central KTEL buses in Greece can be found in Athens. Whether you’re staying within the limits of Athens or traveling around the rest of Greece as well, the KTEL buses are a good choice.

The Metro

The Metro, or subway, is the quickest mode of transportation you’ll find in Athens. You can get from attraction to attraction via the Metro. This is the perfect choice of transportation for anyone looking to see the various sites around Athens. The Metro runs every 3 – 5 minutes from 5 am until midnight and even goes into the suburbs as the stops are expanding farther out.

Tram

There is also a tram that connects Syntagma Square, in the centre of Athens, to the coastal suburbs in the south. The downside to the trams are that they are slow, but the coaches are comfortable, so if you’re looking to relax with a view, this is a good choice for you. The tram runs on two routes: Athens at Syntagma to Voula, which runs through Nea Smyrni, Paleo Faliro, Alimos, Helliniko, and Glyfada, and Athens at Peace and Friendship Stadium to Voula, which runs through the same towns as the first route.

You have a number of options for traveling around Athens. Depending on your activities and how much you want to spend, you’ll find a mode of transportation that works for you.

Greece is a wonderful country to visit, but the problem is, there are so many good things to see that it can bee difficult to figure out how to spend your time!  No matter where in the country you ultimately end up, whether you are visiting the islands or somewhere on the mainland, you will likely need to pass through Athens to get there.

Instead of moving on quickly from Greece’s major city, why not spend a few days there? If you only have a few days or a weekend in Athens, these are some things you can do while in Athens:

Visit the Acropolis

The Acropolis of Athens is a citadel rumored to have been a military fortress because of its vantage location and available historical importance. It is home to the remains of a series of sites and buildings considered to be of great historical significant by experts. The site is actually the most important sign of ancient Greek way of life. Some of the most important areas of the Acropolis are the Parthenon, The Temple of Athena Nike and the Erectheion.

Head to the Temple of Poseidon

Found around about 30 kilometers to the south of Athens in Cape Sounio, the Temple of Poseidon has an interesting past. It is believed to be the place where Aegeus, an ancient king of Athens, died because he believed that his son had perished in a fight with a monster. This site also boasts a few artifacts, and some are believed to date as far back as the 8th century. There are also some great views here so you might want to come at sunset!

Enjoy the Plaka Area

Are you interested in hanging out in an old, traditional neighborhood? If so, the Plaka is for you! Located near the Parthenon, Syntagma Square, and Monastiraki, this historical neighborhood is full of life. It is a gorgeous neighborhood that boasts houses from as far back as the 19th century. The nearby Anafiotika area also stands out quite prominently and is lined with Cycladic houses that lead you all the way to the Parthenon.

Lounge at the Beach

Although there are new beaches directly in the main parts of the city, there are some that are fairly close. There are tons of beaches near the city, and all you have to do is choose one and organize your transportation! Some are accessible by public transportation, but you could always hire a taxi. If you are looking to feel the sand between your toes and the wind in your hair, then you have to check out places like Lagonisi, Kalivia, Loutsa, Legrena, Schinias and Nea Makri. Here’s a look at some of the best beaches you can visit while in Athens.

Eat Delicious Greek Food

There are plenty of options for eating great meals in Athens. There is also some great street food! Whether you grab some traditional street food, eat in a taverna, or make your way to one of the newer, fancier restaurants, you can’t go wrong! It all depends what you are in the mood for. Check out the Monastiraki, Thission and Plaka areas, which are thught to have some of the best restaurants in Athens.

Whether you are looking for good food or a rather interesting lesson in history and culture, Athens has something for everyone. Although you might wish you had more time in the city, you at least have enough time to do these activities!

Athens isn’t just a city for history buffs – it’s for families and kids, too! This is one of those cities that is perfectly for stirring up the imagination. Kids especially have a great time imaging the way things were back in Ancient Greece. They also tend to love Greek mythology and in general love to have fun and learn about new cultures. Here are some of the top activities that families can do together while they’re visiting Athens:

Experience a Piece of History at the Acropolis

History doesn’t have to be all about boring lectures and staring at artifacts in a museum. Visiting historical sites such as the Acropolis in Athens gives families a chance to experience this history first hand. Climb up the hill by foot and tell stories of Ancient Greece. Visit the Parthenon and the other ancient buildings on site and take some time to really explore all that the Acropolis has to offer. This is one of the top family sites in all of Athens! For those who absolutely do love museums, the Acropolis Museum is something you won’t want to miss, either. This is where many of the artifacts that were found at the Acropolis are being stored.

Enjoy the Bustling Market at Monastiraki

For those visiting the city, Monastiraki is truly a joyous affair. This is where people from all over the city come together to buy goods and it is a particular good spot for families who happen to visiting Athens. You can not only find some great deals here on souvenirs, but it is also a fun way to experience a traditional aspect of the Greek culture. People love to come together here to find great deals, negotiate prices, and even socialize. Children love it, as well, because the market offers a great way to get some exercise. There are often kids here playing games and running through the streets while their families either shop or work at one of the stalls.

Go to the Temple of Poseidon

The Temple of Poseidon is located in Cape Sounion. There are daily excursions from the center of Athens to Cape Sounion multiple times a day. You could also easily drive here or take a taxi. The temple ruins date from the 5th-century and were dedicated to Poseidon, the god of sea.

Ancient sailors would see the white pillars from sea and know they were almost home. On one of these pillars you can find the name “Byron” as the famous poet Lord Byron engraved his name there in 1810. There is a café at the site as well as access to a small beach.

Visit the Attica Zoological Park

Does your family love animals? If so, the Attica Zoological Park is the perfect place to visit in Athens once you are finished with all those historical sites! This is an especially popular activities for families who have smaller children, who tend to love learning about the animals and attending the shows at the zoo.

There is also a playground for the children that includes swings, slides, and other playground equipment. Animals at the park include seals, dolphins, giraffes, reptiles, and more. The animals are the most active in the morning and evening, especially during the hot summer months.

Watch the Changing of the Guards

Another great activity to do in Athens that the whole family will love is to watch the changing of the guards in front of the parliament building in Syntagma Square at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Officially, the ceremony takes place every Sunday morning at 11 AM. If watching this ceremony is important to your family, you should plan your trip accordingly.

Head to the Beach

There are many beautiful beaches to enjoy in Athens. Voula is an organized beach not far from Athens. There are many cafés, taverns, and beach bars lining the beachfront. Kavouri beach is a good choice for families as it has safe, shallow water, lots of space on the beach, and plenty of cafés. Alimos beach is close to Athens city center. The beach offers water sports including jet skiing and windsurfing. There is also a children’s area with a water slide and play area.

Another great beach is Vouliagmeni and it is the perfect place for the whole family! It includes a play area for children, water slide, tennis and volleyball courts, along with restaurants that will leave you more than satisfied. If you’re looking for more of an upscale adventure, try Athens Lagonisi Beach. There are other beaches scattered throughout the area too, just ask around to see which people prefer!

Browse the Acropolis Museum

Interested to know what’s been found by excavators in the Acropolis over the millennia? At the Acropolis Museum, they have collected all of the artifacts recovered from as early as 3000 BC. As you ascend the three floors of the museum, which are broken into sections of history, you journey through time, ending on the fourth-floor gift shop.

There are ruins, ancient sanctuaries, statues, as well as gifts to deities like Athena. The museum uses glass extensively throughout, including the glass floor and an all-glass gallery. The artifacts are showcased in a new, captivating way thanks to the use of natural light. The unique design of the museum and the incredible artifacts will let you experience history like never before!

Athens is a great city for families, as long as you choose the right activities! The ones listed here are sure to be a crowd pleaser.

There is so much to see in Athens, including some of the top museums in the world. Be sure to plan ahead to make the most of your museum visits.

Athens Archaeological MuseumNational Archaeological Museum

The National Archaeological Museum in Athens, opened in 1891 is often simply referred to as the National Museum. Considered the “best museum in Greece”, it houses the world’s best collection of ancient Greek art, displayed chronologically from 7000 BC to AD 500. Treasures include sculptures, pottery, jewelry, frescoes, and other artifacts found all over Greece including Mycenae, Epidavros, Santorini, and Olympia dating from the Neolithic era to classical periods. There is so much to see at the museum that people can visit twice.

Agora Museum

Within the Ancient Agora, an ancient marketplace that was at one time the focal point of administrative, commercial, political, and social activity in Athens, is the Agora Museum. The museum is housed in the Stoa of Attalos which was once a shopping mall. It was originally built by King Attalos II of Pergamon and later destroyed. It was reconstructed in the 1950s by the American School of Classical Studies and the reconstruction was funded by a donation from John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Entrance to the Agora Museum in the Stoa of Attalos is included with a ticket to visit the Ancient Agora. The exhibits display the complexities of ancient life.

Acropolis Museum

A trip to the Acropolis isn’t complete without a stop at the Acropolis Museum, an international museum of the 21st century that holds the surviving treasures of the Acropolis. It has a total area of 25,000 square meters with exhibition space of over 14,000 square meters. In addition to viewing the galleries, there are plenty of other attractions for visitors to enjoy. The Museum occasionally holds music events and visitors can enjoy contemporary and orchestral concerts performed in the Museum’s courtyard and the Museum hosts’ small group performances in the balcony of the second floor overlooking the Archaic Gallery.

Benaki Museum

The Benaki Museum includes a private collection of over 20,000 objects that are laid out in chronological order in 36 rooms. It provides a panoramic view of Greek history from the Stone Age (7000 BC) to the 20th century. The collection contains a diverse array of Greek arts and crafts, paintings and jewelry, local costumes, and political memorabilia. It depicts the evolution of Greek painting, sculpture, and handicrafts.

Museum of Cycladic Art

The Museum of Cycladic Art features the remnants of a culture that flourished in the Cyclades from 3200-2000 BC. Most prominent are the semi-abstract Cycladic figurines. Most are female forms which possibly convey cult objects of a goddess religion. The beautiful marble carvings are unlike anything found in contemporary civilizations. The simplicity of these marble statues inspired many 20th century artists and sculptors including Picasso, Modigliani, and Henry Moore.

While in Athens, you’ll want to consider visiting some of these fun museums. They all showcase a different piece of history or of the Greek culture.
